La Pointe du Petit Ailly, Nahmad W1445 collectionhand painted reproduction

A meadow descends towards the sea under a clear sky crossed by clouds. On the left, the small customs post clings to the top of the cliff; on the right, the Petit Ailly promontory advances in blue-purple water. Monet contrasts the dense material of the grass and the terrain with the wider breathing of the sky and the English Channel.

Look at the work

The customs officer's house overlooks a bright meadow which descends towards the sea and the promontory of Petit Ailly

The foreground is a mosaic of greens, yellows, pinks and purples. The keys follow several directions and suggest uneven terrain rather than a flat lawn. The house, placed near the left edge, is dark enough to stand out, but its walls and roof remain integrated into the colors of the coast.

The sea occupies an oblique band which widens to the right. Horizontal blue, turquoise and mauve lines indicate its surface. Above, clear clouds alternate with pale blue passages. This atmospheric opening balances the weight of the cliff without reducing its presence.

The landscape progresses from the tactile detail of the grasses towards the fluid distance of the sea and the sky, without break between these two regimes of touch.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A foreground worked like a tapestry

The herbs bring together yellow, green, pink and purple marks. Their diversity must remain visible so that the terrain retains its relief and light.

02

A house placed on the edge of the field

The customs post does not form the geometric center, but it gives the starting point of the gaze. Its scale connects the nearby meadow to the distant promontory.

03

A coast that organizes depth

The diagonal of the shore separates the land from the sea and leads towards the point. Changes in blue and mauve make this distance without the need for rigid contours.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 2,200 × 1,720 px. It corresponds to version W1445 documented by Christie's and has been converted into a real WebP without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Three clearly hierarchical plans

Meadow, sea and sky occupy different surfaces and use different touches. This hierarchy must survive even when the contours remain flexible.

Color02

Greens warmed by the land

Yellow, ocher, pink and red-brown cross the foreground. They give green a richness that would disappear in too cold reproduction.

Matter03

Clear but unbleached light

The sky and clouds contain blue, cream, pink and gray-purple. Preserving these shades maintains the atmosphere without losing contrast with the cliff.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These benchmarks concern the Wildenstein 1445 version, documented by Christie's and today associated with the Nahmad collection.

Identification01

Wildenstein 1445

This oil on canvas from 1897 measures 73.5 × 92.7 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 97" lower left.

First sale by Monet02

Durand-Ruel acquired the painting in November 1898

The provenance published by Christie's begins with Monet, then Paul Durand-Ruel, who purchased the work directly from the artist on November 28, 1898. It then passed through the merchant's New York gallery.

A work exhibited since 189803

Presented at the Georges Petit gallery

The painting appears in Monet's personal exhibition organized in June 1898 at Georges Petit. It will then be shown in several major retrospectives devoted to the painter in the 20th century.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact Wildenstein 1445 version, distinct from the gray time W1447
  • The original horizontal ratio of 73.5 × 92.7 cm
  • The preserved meadow rich in yellow, pink, green and purple
