Look at the work

Vernon appears between a dirt road and bare trees

The low road draws a gentle diagonal. Behind it, the green plots and their fences lead towards the town. The collegiate church, slightly to the left of the center, dominates the houses but remains softened by the atmosphere.

The frank greens of the meadows contrast with the lilacs, blues and grays of the sky and buildings. The poplars receive touches of pale pink and soft green which suggest the first leaves.

The trees in the foreground do not close the view: their thin trunks frame the collegiate church and make the depth of the countryside noticeable.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A view from cultivated land

Paths, fences and meadows occupy almost half of the canvas. The city is thus viewed from its rural environment rather than from the Seine.

02

The collegiate church as a distant landmark

Its dark roof and tower protrude beyond the houses. The contours, however, remain flexible, as if filtered by the humidity of the sky.

03

The discreet signs of early spring

The vegetation is already green, but the tall trees still bear few leaves. The gray-purple sky strengthens this intermediate season.

Composition01

Keep the four trunks in the foreground

Their spacing and finesse are essential for framing the city without forming a screen.

Color02

Preserve the blue-gray collegiate church

It must remain identifiable while belonging to the distant atmosphere.

Matter03

Keep the ocher path and green meadows

This hot-cold contrast builds the foreground and leads towards Vernon.
