Look at the work

A curve of trees and reflections in summer light

The nearest poplars are cut by the upper edge, which accentuates their height. The row then bends towards the center and disappears behind the bank. This curve at depth is doubled in the water, where it becomes darker and more moving.

The clear sky and white clouds are reflected in the foreground in touches of blue, cream and pale pink. The foliage mixes green, yellow and purple; the trunks receive pinkish flashes which prevent the row from forming a uniform barrier.

W1310 holds a deep landscape in a square: the curve of the trees opens up the space, then the mirror of the Epte folds it towards the viewer.

The National Galleries of Scotland documents an 1891 oil on canvas measuring 82 × 81.4 cm, purchased in 1925 and now on display at the Scottish National Gallery.

Monet observes the row from the Epte with a boat suitable for working on several canvases. It can thus find a precise lighting effect when conditions repeat themselves.

Trees saved during the series

When the municipality of Limetz decided to sell the poplars for their wood, Monet made an arrangement with the buyer so that they would remain standing long enough to complete their studies.

The row should not be straightened. Its progressive inflection towards the center produces distance and distinguishes W1310 from more frontal compositions.

Color02

A summer made of blue, green and pink

The sky remains frankly blue, but the trees introduce purple and the trunks pink. These shades prevent the palette from simply turning green.

Matter03

Reflection is not a copy

In the water, shapes fragment and darken. The horizontal touches of the current must interrupt the verticals of the trunks and foliage.
