À propos de l’œuvre

Pot de gingembre rempli de chrysanthèmes, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris

Pot of ginger with chrysanthemums, F198Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A compact bouquet of yellow, white, pink and orange chrysanthemums fills a jar with blue-green ginger. The very dark brown background tightens the composition around the flowers and the oval decoration of the pot, whose enameled surface contrasts with the thick petals.

Look at the work

A tight bouquet stands out against a decorated jar and an almost black background

The small flowers occupy the entire upper part and form an irregular crown. Yellows, ochres and whites concentrate in the center, while a few pink and red tones appear at the edges.

The blue-green jar is painted as a dense volume. Its oval medallion and light reflections remain visible despite the shadow; the enlarged base stabilizes the very lively mass of the bouquet.

Ginger pot with chrysanthemums F198/JH1125 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel of 40 × 29.5 cm, painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The work is kept in a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh combines two opposing textures: the hard, decorated surface of the enameled sandstone, then the soft accumulation of small corollas. The dark background intensifies this confrontation of matter.

01

The chrysanthemums are assembled in brief touches

Each flower is suggested by a few light accents around a darker heart. Repetition creates a compact vibration rather than a botanical inventory.

02

The blue-green of the jar cools the yolks of the bouquet

The complementary colors reinforce each other. Turquoise, gray and cream reflections advance the container in front of the brown at the bottom.

03

The oval medallion gives a second pattern to look at

This decorated area enlivens the center of the pot and responds to the round shapes of the flowers. It transforms a utilitarian object into an essential element of the composition.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F198/JH1125, the dimensions of 40 × 29.5 cm and the panel-mounted support make it possible to precisely identify this Parisian still life.

Object

The ginger jar introduces a decorative object into still life

Its blue-green glaze, short collar and oval panel give Van Gogh a complex surface to combine contour, reflection and pattern.

Period

The painting belongs to the floral research of 1886

In Paris, Van Gogh uses bouquets and familiar objects to lighten his palette and test clearer oppositions between warm and cold colors.

Support

The canvas is today marked as panel mounted

This material clarification concerns the current state of the original. The proposed reproduction remains an oil painting made by hand on canvas.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the narrow silhouette of the bouquet, the variety of small corollas, the brown background, the blue-green reflections of the jar, its oval medallion and the visible thickness of the keys.

  • Yellow and white chrysanthemums grouped at the top
  • Pink and orange accents placed on the periphery
  • The short collar of the blue-green jar
  • The oval medallion painted in the center of the container
  • The dark brown background which isolates each outline
