Le presbytère de Nuenen, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · September -beginning October 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

The Presbytery of Nuenen, F182Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Seen from across the street, the pastor's house stands behind two trees laden with autumn leaves. Two women converse near the entrance, while the neighboring shed closes the composition on the right.

Look at the work

The family home appears behind the trees and two motionless figures

The building is seen from the front, but the trunks prevent any rigid symmetry. The one in the center cuts the facade between the door and the windows; the dark branches unfold in front of the roof and mix architecture and vegetation.

The two women, small and almost melted into the shadows, stand in front of the entrance. Their presence gives the scale of the residence and transforms the architectural view into a lived scene, without interrupting the calm of the street.

The Presbytery of Nuenen F182/JH948 is an oil on canvas of 33 × 43 cm painted in September - early October 1885. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under the inventory s0140V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh constructs the image with a muted range of earth, olive and blue gray. The lighter touches of the sky and windows do not evenly illuminate the facade: they emerge between the autumn masses.

01

The trees cut out the facade

Three uneven vertical lines pass in front of the house. They create several plans and look away from a purely architectural reading.

02

Light concentrates in the openings

The windows receive some cream and pale blue accents. These small surfaces are enough to make the brown facade breathe without dissipating its restrained atmosphere.

03

The street forms a large base

The almost empty foreground occupies a large strip. Its horizontal brush strokes stabilize the house and keep the viewer away from the threshold.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F182/JH948, the 33 × 43 cm format and inventory s0140V1962 identify the front view of the presbytery, distinct from the night view from the rear of the F183 house.

Family

The presbytery was the home of Van Gogh's parents

Pastor Theodorus van Gogh and his wife Anna had lived there since 1882. Vincent lived there from December 1883 until the spring of 1885.

Date

The painting follows the death of his father by a few months

Theodorus van Gogh died on March 26, 1885. In the fall, Vincent returned to the motif from across the street and painted the facade surrounded by foliage.

Figures

The two women could be his mother and sister

This identification remains a hypothesis. Their discreet conversation nevertheless gives the place a family and daily presence.

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the ocher brown facade, the two trunks in the foreground, the red foliage, the small silhouettes, the light windows, the neighboring shed and the wide dark street.

  • The central trunk which shares the facade
  • The two women in front of the entrance
  • The windows lit by small cream touches
  • The autumn foliage that hides the roof
  • The lower shed placed to the right of the garden
