Spring in Vétheuil W579hand painted reproduction

In the foreground, a green meadow opens in front of Vétheuil. A woman and a child advance in the grass, surrounded by small silhouettes, while the still light trees reveal the houses and the bell tower under a vast milky blue sky. Painted in 1880, Printemps à Vétheuil is an oil on canvas measuring 60.5 × 80.5 cm kept at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen under the number St 93. The work corresponds to Wildenstein 579.

Look at the work

The meadow, the figures and the village are captured in the same surge of spring light

The large expanse of grass takes up almost half of the painting. The characters are not arranged in a frieze: some stay near the trees, others move away towards the houses, and the central group advances slightly towards the viewer. This dispersion animates the depth without transforming the landscape into a narrative scene.

Two thin trees cross the sky in the center left. Their emerging foliage, indicated by small touches of yellow and green, still reveals blue. The houses are built with very light whites, pinks and purples; the bell tower provides the only compact vertical accent in this almost air-dissolved village.

Monet does not separate the subject from its atmosphere: figures, trees and walls appear with the same brief touch that makes the spring day vibrate.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A meadow designed as a moving surface

Emerald greens, turquoise, yellow and blue are constantly interrupted. The keys sometimes follow the horizontal of the terrain, sometimes the direction of the grass, avoiding the effect of a uniform carpet.

02

Tiny but decisive figures

The dark dress of the woman, the white of the child and the red accents of the walkers give the scale of the space. Their contrast catches the eye without competing with the sky or the village.

03

The sky occupies half of the composition

Its blues, whites and roses are placed in wide passages. This luminous opening lightens the houses and brings out the young branches, whose transparency is an essential sign of the season.

Read this specific version

The only image is the official color file of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Its native definition of 2880 × 2117 px is preserved, without enlargement, then encoded in real WebP.

Composition01

Respect the place of walkers

The main group should remain small and slightly off-center. Moving or expanding it would change the relationship between daily life and the size of the meadow.

Color02

Keep greens warm and cold

The foreground combines bluish green, soft yellow and darker accents. Their alternation should suggest variations in terrain rather than a single decorative flat.

Matter03

Preserve the lightness of the branches

The network of branches crosses the sky but never closes it. Too hard a line would make the trees wintery; too little material would make their role in the composition disappear.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen documents Spring in Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1880, 60.5 × 80.5 cm, St 93 inventory and Wildenstein 579 catalog.

Outdoor painting01

A moment quickly captured

The museum notice emphasizes that Monet worked outside to fix the transient effects of light. The punctuated and very lively touch here reflects the speed necessary for this observation.

Collection02

A loan from the Stichting Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

The work is numbered St 93. It entered the collection in 1951 thanks to a donation from Mrs. EY van Beek-van Hoorn Janssen and today falls under the Department of Modern Art.

Location03

Vétheuil, where Monet lived from 1878

The village, its church and the meadows near the Seine become regular motifs. W579 retains the river less than the inhabited space, seen through trees and walkers.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 579 version
  • The Women and Children's Group at the center
  • Young trees transparent in front of the sky
  • The bell tower and the houses of Vétheuil in the distance

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This light stage is suitable for a bedroom, living room or work room. An ivory, pale blue or almond green wall and a light wood frame highlight the sky and greens without cooling the figures.
