Vincent van Gogh · May -June 1887 · Asnières-sur-Seine

The Rispal Restaurant in Asnières, F355Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

On the banks of the Seine, the high cream facade of Restaurant Rispal stands between flowering chestnut trees; walkers, green shutters and blue signs liven up this bright view of the Parisian suburbs.

Look at the work

A tavern in Asnières transformed by color

The building is laid diagonally and fills almost the entire height of the canvas. Its gable bears the name RISPAL in blue capitals, repeated on two orange panels on the right.

The yellow street crosses the foreground, punctuated with small figures. The greens of the trees and shutters respond to the reds of the chimneys, the oranges of the ground and the light blue of the sky.

Painted in Asnières in May - June 1887, this painting is F355/JH1266. The oil on canvas measures 73.3 × 60 cm and is numbered 2015.13.10 at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh abandons here the dark tones of his beginnings. It juxtaposes frank complements and covers the shapes with small touches that make the air, the facade and the vegetation vibrate.

01

Diagonal gives momentum to building

The restaurant wall moves back to the right and leads the gaze from the sunny street to the trees in the background.

02

The signs are part of the composition

The blue letters on the gable and the orange panels are not anecdotal details: they structure the flat areas of color.

03

The contours remain visible

Blue, green or orange lines isolate figures, trunks and windows, reinforcing the clarity of the scene.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Nelson-Atkins scientific notice documents the title, technique, dimensions, provenance and material changes observed on the canvas.

First title

View of Asnières with chestnut trees in bloom

The inventory drawn up by Andries Bonger in 1891 first described the trees rather than the name of the restaurant.

Location

Now missing address

The restaurant was probably located near the Clichy bridge, in the leisure landscape that Van Gogh explored with Paul Signac.

Color

Reds now attenuated

The conservation study signals the sensitivity of certain red pigments, an important element in understanding the current balance.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the legible gable, green shutters, signs and yellow street light without making the facade uniformly white.

  • The name RISPAL on the gable
  • Light green shutters
  • The four orange-red fireplaces
  • Chestnut trees in bloom
  • Little figures on the road
