The Rio della Salute sinks under a stone arch between orange, pink and cream facades. The vertical framing brings the walls together, while a blue sky and dark foliage open the upper part. In this version preserved in Hakone, the architecture remains more assertive and the light warmer than in the two other paintings on the same canal.

A narrow Venetian canal where the orange facade leads to the bridge

On the left, the floors and balconies form a discontinuous wall of warm rectangles. A strip of sky crosses the center, then the gaze descends towards the bridge placed very low. The straight, lighter wall frames the arch and accentuates the depth.

The water takes on the tones of the facades in long brown, pink and green touches. A dark gondola slides in front of the bridge and gives the scale of the passage. At the top right, the tree cuts out the blue of the sky with small touches of yellow, green and purple.

In W1763, the perspective of the canal is as much due to the vertical reflections as to the facades which produce them.

The third version of the Rio della Salute

The Wildenstein catalog brings together three views of this canal under the numbers 1761 to 1763. The Pola Museum's canvas is the largest and most slender, with 100.2 cm in height and 65.2 cm in width.

Late afternoon light

All three variations show the pattern under light entering low from the left. Monet does not follow all the hours of a day here: he takes a specific moment to explore the Venetian mist and its colorful accords.

A composition started from a gondola

The low, frontal viewpoint places the viewer at water level. The walls become almost abstract colorful planes, but the bridge, balconies and boat maintain the exact identity of the place.

W1761 belongs to a private collection, W1762 to the Museum Barberini and W1763 to the Pola Museum of Art. The three retain the same bridge but modify format, light and colored range.

History03

Presented with views of Venice

Monet resumed his paintings after his return to Giverny. The three Rio della Salute were sold with the other Venetian views to merchants Bernheim-Jeune and Durand-Ruel, then shown in Paris in 1912.
