Red chrysanthemums W635hand painted reproduction

A bouquet of red, orange and pink chrysanthemums springs from a light vase placed on a table covered with red fabric. The almost black background isolates the flowers and makes their petals luminous, while the decorated vase brings together blues, browns and whites. Dated 1881, this oil on vertical canvas measuring 82 × 65 cm belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 635.

Look at the work

An incandescent bouquet detached from a deep background

The vase sits near the bottom edge and bears a large sheaf that widens upward. Dark green stems and leaves remain visible between flowers. The bouquet is not symmetrical: several heads overflow at the sides and give the impression of free growth.

Vermilion red, carmine, orange, pink and yellow build the corollas in small touches. The fabric takes up these tones in a more solid material, while the black brown background and the light vase create two opposite contrasts.

The light does not come from a window depicted: it seems produced by the juxtaposition of warm reds, white vase and dark background.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A floral mass without general outline

Each flower is indicated by a few short, curved touches. Their superposition constructs the bouquet without enclosing it in a regular silhouette.

02

A dark background that increases saturation

The reds appear brighter on contact with the black brown. The leaves, barely lighter than the bottom, serve as a transition between the petals and space.

03

A decorated vase that catches the eye at the bottom of the painting

Its blue and brown patterns, its light border and its rounded volume give a precise base to the abundance of flowers.

Composition01

Keep the variety of reds

Carmine, vermilion, pink and orange should remain distinct to avoid a uniform floral mass.

Color02

Preserve the leaves in the dark background

They are discreet but essential: they separate the flowers and give depth to the bouquet.

Matter03

Keep the vase patterns and red fabric

The vase structures the bottom of the composition, while the fabric extends the colors of the bouquet without stealing light.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Red Chrysanthemums documentation indicates an oil on canvas from 1881, 82 × 65 cm, in a private collection and registered in the Wildenstein catalog under number 635.

Exposure01

The painting appears in the seventh impressionist exhibition

Presented in Paris by Durand-Ruel in March 1882, it shows that Monet then exhibited floral still lifes alongside his landscapes of Vétheuil.

Gender02

A still life treated with the touch of landscape

The petals, leaves and reflections of the vase are constructed by visible touches. The light is captured as a changing effect rather than described by a smooth pattern.

Version03

W635 identifies this specific red bouquet

The catalog number, the vertical dimensions and the decorated vase make it possible to distinguish this composition from the numerous bouquets of chrysanthemums painted by Monet.
