Roses et anémones, par Vincent van Gogh

Roses and anemonesReproduction of oil painting on canvas

In a blue Japanese vase, pale roses and red anemones open in front of an intense green background. The bouquet, very close to the viewer, becomes a field of colorful touches rather than a wise still life.

Look at the work

A square bouquet on a green background

The blue and white vase is placed at the edge of a table whose color almost blends in with the background. Cream roses occupy the upper part, while red anemones and foliage descend towards the sides. Several flowers are cut by the framing.

The green background is animated by visible oblique touches. The whites of the roses contain yellows, pinks and blues; anemones bring bright black and red centers. The Japanese vase provides a cold base for this profusion.

The square composition brings the bouquet closer to the viewer's scale: flowers, leaves and vase seem to grow towards the limits of the canvas.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Musée d'Orsay preserves Roses and anemones under the inventory RF 1954 12. The work is cataloged F764/JH2045 and must be distinguished from the bouquets of roses painted a few weeks earlier in Saint-Rémy.

01

A deliberately tight framing

The bouquet almost completely fills the square. The flowers cut by the edges and the stems that deviate from the center give the impression of growth that extends beyond the canvas.

02

Green as an active color

The background is not neutral: it contrasts its green vibration with the reds of the anemones and brings out the light pinks. His brushstrokes participate in the general movement.

03

A recognizable Japanese vase

The blue and white container recalls Van Gogh's enduring interest in Japanese prints and objects. Its cold and compact decoration stabilizes the irregular mass of the bouquet.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Roses and anemones is an oil on canvas measuring 51.7 × 52 cm, painted in Auvers in June 1890. It bears the references F764/JH2045 and the inventory RF 1954 12.

After Van Gogh's death, the painting passed from Theo to Paul Gachet Jr. He kept it until his donation to the French state in 1954.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must retain the vibrant green of the background, the nuanced light of the roses, the dark reds of the anemones and the blue design of the Japanese vase.

  • Cream roses modeled in yellow, pink and blue
  • Red anemones with almost black centers
  • The blue and white Japanese vase
  • The green background covered with oblique touches

In your interior

A square, lively and generous still life

The dominant green and red flowers bring immediate presence to a dining room, kitchen or living room. The almost square format works well on a narrow wall or in a frame composition.
