À propos de l’œuvre

Roses, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · May 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Roses in a vaseReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A terracotta vase bears a bouquet of roses that extends almost from edge to edge. The flowers appear white today, but their discolored red pigments once formed a pink ensemble on a green background.

Look at the work

Roses in full bloom on a spring green

The branches spread into a wide crown. Some roses are open from the front, others fold to the side or remain buttoned; the dark, angular leaves give a framework to the light bouquet.

The brown vase rests on a green table barely separated from the wall. Long diagonal touches enliven the mint green background, while the petals are constructed by thick ribbons of white, cream and pale pink.

The bouquet celebrates less the cut flower than the vitality of spring: each stem, leaf and corolla seems to continue its movement beyond the vase.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The National Gallery of Art preserves this great still life under number 1991.67.1. It corresponds to F681/JH1976, the horizontal composition of the rose series.

01

An altered complementary agreement

Originally, roses were downright pink and stood out against green. The gradual disappearance of red lacquers transformed the balance without erasing all traces of the initial color.

02

Impasto left in relief

Corollas are deposited in thick ridges. The material captures light and distinguishes the petals, but required an unusually long drying time.

03

A composition designed with three other bouquets

This canvas forms with a second Roses and two Iris a set of alternating formats and chromatic chords, painted at the end of the stay in Saint-Rémy.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Roses in a Vase is an oil on canvas measuring 71 × 90 cm, painted in Saint-Rémy in May 1890. It bears the inventory 1991.67.1 and the references F681/JH1976.

Series

The large horizontal version

The National Gallery retains the wide composition with a green background. The vertical canvas F682/JH1979 belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is a separate work.

Drying

Shipped after Van Gogh's departure

The pictorial layer was still too fresh on May 16. An asylum employee kept the two Roses, then sent them after drying; they arrived in Auvers on June 24.

Collection

Number 1991.67.1

Pamela Harriman donated the work to the National Gallery of Art in memory of W. Averell Harriman. The donation started in 1991 was completed in 1997.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the original width, the pink traces of the petals, the diversity of greens and the thickness of the material without uniformly whitening the bouquet.

  • The thick corollas still tinged with pink
  • Dark green leaves with angular contours
  • The brown vase centered under the floral mass
  • The long diagonals of the light green background
