À propos de l’œuvre

La Ruijterkade à Amsterdam, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · October 1885 · Amsterdam, Netherlands

The De Ruijterkade in Amsterdam, F211Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

On the damp quay of the De Ruijterkade, passers-by, carts and silhouettes pass each other in front of the steamboats. Masts, chimneys and smoke mingle under a beige-gray sky observed during a brief stay in Amsterdam.

Look at the work

Amsterdam port seized under heavy skies

The characters in the foreground are slightly reflected on the wet roadway. Behind them, the dark hulls and dock installations form a compact strip, punctuated by steam chimneys.

The very fine masts rise to the sky and organize the view into a succession of verticals. Dark smoke drifts to the right, giving movement to this small panoramic painting.

De Ruijterkade in Amsterdam F211/JH973 is a 20.5 × 27.1 cm oil on panel painted in October 1885. Preserved at the Van Gogh Museum, it bears the number s0085V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Despite its reduced format, Van Gogh assembles several plans: the quay with its figures, the boats and their superstructures, then the vast sky. The touches remain quick but each dark accent contributes to the activity of the port.

01

The quay forms a lively scene

A few silhouettes are enough to evoke traffic: groups dressed in black, blue characters and small light carts. Their reflections suggest a recently wet roadway.

02

Masts and chimneys cut through the sky

These uneven verticals give a nervous rhythm to the upper half. They make it possible to distinguish sailboats, steamers and port installations without careful description.

03

Smoke connects the port to the atmosphere

A wide gray-green trail extends above the boats. It blurs the industrial horizon and blends into the sky, creating a sense of humid and changing weather.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official Van Gogh Museum notice documents the panel support, exact dimensions, catalogs raisonnés and provenance of this view of Amsterdam.

Stay

Three days in Amsterdam

Van Gogh stayed in the city from October 6 to 8, 1885 and notably visited the newly opened Rijksmuseum. During this trip he also painted several small urban views.

Provenance

Sent to Theo in October 1885

The museum says Vincent sent the sign to his brother Theo around October 13. The work then remained in the family before its transfer to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must keep the small panoramic format, the silhouettes reflected on the quay, the network of masts, the chimneys, the oblique smoke and the nuanced range of gray, brown and green.

  • Groups of passers-by on the wet quay
  • Dark reflections under the silhouettes
  • The chimneys and hulls of steamboats
  • The forest of fine masts in front of the sky
  • The big gray-green smoke drifting to the right
