San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice W1747hand painted reproduction

The island of San Giorgio Maggiore appears in a very clear, almost milky light. The Palladian facade, the dome and the campanile stand out in small differences of blue, pink and green. Two gondolas slide in front of the monastery and give a human scale to this architecture suspended between the lagoon and the sky.

Look at the work

San Giorgio Maggiore seen from the Britannia Hotel, in late afternoon light that erases the contours

The campanile, slightly to the left of the center, constitutes the main vertical. The facade of the church is placed lower and further to the right, while the monastic buildings stretch the island across the entire width. The lagoon occupies almost half of the canvas and bears the small silhouettes of the gondolas.

The stone is not white: it receives pale yellow, pink, sea green and blue. The shadows remain light and open. In the lagoon, very fine horizontal touches take on the same colors, so that the monument seems to be bathed in atmosphere rather than clearly reflected.

W1747 is a study of light as much as a view of Venice: the architecture remains readable, but each shape is crossed by the color of the air.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Monet's fourth motif of the day

Museum Wales says Monet probably painted this view between four and six in the afternoon, his "fourth motif". He returned to the same framing during several sessions to adjust the whole thing to a precise lighting effect.

02

A viewpoint from the hotel window

Monet and Alice stay at the Britannia Hotel on the Grand Canal. From this position, the Palladian monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore presents itself almost head-on, beyond the open expanse of the lagoon.

03

The gondolas prevent the scene from becoming still

The boats are tiny, but their dark, horizontal lines animate the foreground. They introduce a measure and movement that contrast with the large diffuse masses of the church and the sky.

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 2,717 × 1,958 px. The exact Museum Wales file remains at its native definition and has been converted into a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The campanile as an axis, the facade as a counterpoint

The tower first catches the eye, then the light facade and its dome shift the gaze to the right. This asymmetry gives the panorama its living balance.

Color02

Ivory yellow, celadon blue, pink and mauve

The colors are very little saturated. Their proximity makes the light vibrant, but requires that reproduction maintain small temperature differences between the facades and the sky.

Matter03

A horizontal touch in the lagoon

Brush strokes are arranged in small streaks superimposed on the water. In architecture, they are shorter and more vertical, just enough to maintain essential volumes.
