Look at the work

Provençal spring watched across Japan

Van Gogh painted the open plain east of Arles in early spring 1889. Peach trees in bloom occupied fields separated by ditches, fences and paths; low houses and isolated trees lead towards the blue line of the Alpilles.

In a letter to Theo, the artist brings together the white flowers and the still snowy mountain of the cherry trees and Mount Fuji seen in the Japanese prints he collected. The canvas combines thick dots for flowers, elongated lines in the fields and a fully vibrant sky.

The real landscape of Crau becomes a Provençal equivalent of the Japan dreamed of by Van Gogh: a clear plain, ordered by color and season.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Reproduction must preserve the great depth of the panorama without losing the texture of the orchards in the foreground.

01

A stratified plain

Paths, ditches and plots overlap in oblique bands up to the houses. These lines give depth without resorting to rigid perspective.

02

Flowers in points

Peach trees are rendered by small white, pink and pale blue impasto. They must remain distinct from the grass and fences drawn by longer lines.

03

A woven sky

The sky is not a flat: thousands of short blue, gray and cream touches produce a fresh light that responds to the flowers.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The format, the Courtauld inventory and the references F514/JH1681 distinguish this panorama from the numerous orchards painted in Arles.

Catalog

Inspiration

Cherry trees and Mount Fuji

Van Gogh associated flowering trees and the distant mountain with the landscapes of Japanese prints that he admired.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The balance depends on the difference between the linear design of the plots, the dotted material of the flowers and the tight vibration of the sky.

  • The depth of strips of land and ditches
  • The white and pink impasto of peach trees
  • Tiny houses that set the scale of the panorama
  • The blue line of the Alpilles under the snow
  • The network of short keys in the sky
