Self-portrait with straw hat, F526Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Under a large yellow straw hat, Van Gogh appears in a light blouse edged with red; the pale face and asymmetrical eyes stand out against a cream background covered with blue-green touches.
Look at the work
A clear face under a sun hat
The bust is cut close to the shoulders and the face turned three-quarters. The huge brim of the hat occupies almost the entire upper width.
Short pink, green, blue and ocher hatching shapes the skin and beard. The background returns to the same rhythm, but with more air between the keys.
This Parisian self-portrait from the summer of 1887 is F526/JH1309. Painted in oil on prepared cardboard, it measures 40.6 × 31.8 cm and belongs to the Detroit Institute of Arts under number 22.13.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The very light palette and colorful hatching bear witness to the neo-impressionist experiences carried out by Van Gogh after his discovery of Parisian artists.
The hat becomes a halo
Its pale yellows surround the forehead and concentrate the light on the face.
The skin is made of separate colors
No uniform flesh tone: pink, green, blue and ocher combine at a distance.
The gaze remains unstable
The two eyes differ slightly and give the portrait a tension that the light palette does not erase.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Identification F526/JH1309 links this image to the Detroit Museum, not the many hat self-portraits preserved elsewhere.
A pioneering acquisition
The Detroit Institute of Arts acquired the painting in 1922, Van Gogh's first work to enter an American public museum.
A prepared box
The light surface contributes to brightness and remains visible between several hatching.
A laboratory of color
Van Gogh used his own face to experiment with new harmonies and ways of painting for free.
