Look at the work

The face becomes the center of a whirlwind of small colorful touches

The dark bust occupies the bottom of the format, while the light hat greatly widens the head. The eyes stare at the viewer and the closed mouth maintains an attentive, almost tense expression.

Around the felt and shoulders, the blue, orange, turquoise and brown lines change direction. They follow the outline of the head, creating a sort of halo that detaches the portrait from the background.

Self-portrait with gray felt hat is an oil on cotton measuring 44.5 × 37.2 cm painted in Paris in September - October 1887. The work F344/JH1353 is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under the number s0016V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum presents this painting as one of the most daring chromatic experiments of the Parisian period. Van Gogh adapts the divided touch of the pointillists in a personal, longer and directed way.

01

The background keys follow the silhouette instead of remaining neutral

They curve around the hat and radiate near the face. The background therefore acts as a visual force which amplifies the presence of the head.

02

The complements strengthen the look and the beard

Blue and orange interact in the background; red and green meet in the beard, eyes and skin. The colors appear brighter because they are placed side by side.

03

The garment prepares a stable base under the mobile face

The dark lapels, blue collar and light shirt form converging bands. This calm construction allows the small touches of the face to retain all their energy.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F344/JH1353, inventory s0016V1962 and 44.5 × 37.2 cm cotton backing identify this precise version among Van Gogh's many Parisian self-portraits.

Pointillism

A technique studied then freely reorganized

Van Gogh took up the idea of separate keys, but he lengthened them and oriented them according to the volume of the face, hat and background.

Color

Some reds have faded since 1887

The museum explains that initially purple features now appear blue. The expected contrast with the yellows was therefore even more powerful originally.

Model

The self-portrait allows him to work without paying for a pose

In Paris, Van Gogh frequently used his reflection to study the skin tones, expressions and new colorful oppositions discovered among the avant-garde.
