À propos de l’œuvre
La Seine avec le Pont de Clichy, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1887 · Paris, Asnières and Clichy sector
The Seine with the Clichy bridge, F303Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two light buildings stand above the bank, visually connected to the bridge which curves its deck to the right. The Seine reflects the yellows of the quay and the blues of the sky, while a very close tuft of reeds introduces a bold foreground.
Look at the work
The bridge and fortifications seem to float in the light
Van Gogh chose an unusual vertical format for a river landscape. The bridge occupies the right third; buildings and trees form a high line, while clear water fills almost the entire lower half.
The reeds cut by the frame, in the foreground, impose the viewer's position at the water's edge. Their long dark green leaves contrast with the short, horizontal touches of the reflections.
The Seine with the Clichy bridge is an oil on canvas of 55 × 46 cm painted during the summer of 1887. Referenced F303/JH1323, this vertical version belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
In the landscapes created along the Seine in 1887, Van Gogh radically clarified his palette through contact with the Impressionists and the Neo-Impressionists. Here he combines a very clear architectural structure with a surface of water almost dissolved by the keys.
The bridge draws a calm curve
Its white parapet starts from the center and descends to the right. This flexible diagonal connects the massive buildings to the open space of the river.
Reflections do not mechanically repeat objects
Yellow, pink, blue and green are distributed in standalone dashes. Water becomes a luminous mosaic rather than an exact mirror.
The reeds suddenly bring the foreground closer together
Their dense green and sharp design break with the pastel tones of the background. They give the eye a point of support before going back towards the bridge.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The references F303/JH1323 distinguish this painting from several other views of the Clichy bridge and the banks of Asnières. The vertical format, the two light buildings and the reeds in the foreground make it possible to precisely identify the reproduced version.
Van Gogh worked along the Seine in 1887
From Paris, he went to Asnières and neighboring towns to paint bridges, factories, restaurants, boats and walkers in an increasingly clear palette.
Contemporary architecture without dramatization
The bridge and urban structures are not hidden by nature. Van Gogh integrates them into the landscape with the same yellows, blues and greens as water and sky.
F303 is kept in a private collection
The Van Gogh Museum presented it in its exhibition dedicated to the landscapes of the Seine. This identification avoids confusing it with F302, F304 or the Dallas canvas.
