À propos de l’œuvre
La Chambre de Van Gogh à Arles, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · September 1889 · Saint-Rémy, after the room painted in Arles in 1888
Van Gogh's Room in Arles, F483Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Yellow bed, red blanket, light blue walls and furniture seen sideways: this small replica from 1889 takes over the bedroom of the Yellow House and was specially painted for Van Gogh's mother and sister.
Look at the work
Arles' room repainted from memory in Saint-Rémy
The bed occupies the entire right side and advances towards the viewer. On the left, two chairs frame a red table carrying pitcher, glass and bottles. The green window closes the bottom, while five images hang on the blue walls.
The lines of the floor, bed and walls do not converge from a single perspective. Each piece of furniture appears slightly tilted. The flat yellow, red, green and blue make objects readable without deep shadows.
The Musée d'Orsay preserves the smallest of the three Rooms. Van Gogh painted it in Saint-Rémy in September 1889, after the first version in October 1888, and sent it to his mother and sister in the Netherlands.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The official notice gives 57.3 × 73.5 cm, the inventory RF 1959 2 and the reference F483; this version must be distinguished from the paintings of Amsterdam and Chicago.
An expressive perspective
The bed, floorboards and walls follow different axes. This tension brings the room closer together and makes its geometry immediately recognizable.
Objects in pairs
Two chairs, two pillows and several portraits organize the room and evoke the desire for a space inhabited by several people.
Color for rest
Van Gogh seeks a feeling of calm through simplified shapes and bold colors rather than shadow or modeling.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Van Gogh made three almost identical oils: the 1888 original in Amsterdam, a copy of the same size in Chicago and this small family replica in Paris.
The little replica
The Orsay canvas is smaller than the Amsterdam and Chicago versions and has some variations in portraits and colors.
For his family
Van Gogh sent this rehearsal to his mother Anna and his sister Willemien in Holland in 1889.
RF 1959 2
Former property of Kôjiro Matsukata, the work joined the French national museums in 1959.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must retain the deliberately offbeat perspective, the proportions of the small version and the precise balance between blue walls, yellow bed and red cover.
- The large yellow bed on the right
- The red blanket and the two pillows
- The two chairs on either side
- The green window at the bottom
- Portraits and prints on blue walls
