Look at the work

Hospital space seen from inside

After his crisis in December 1888, Van Gogh stayed several times in the Arles hospital. Here he represents the men's room from one end: two rows of beds and partitions lead towards the back, while the ceiling beams further accelerate the perspective.

The large central stove shares the foreground. Around him, the seated patients form a dark group; further on, standing figures and two nuns occupy the corridor. The orange-red of the ground contrasts with the greens, blue-grays and slightly lilac whites of the walls.

The room is described precisely, but its inclined lines, exaggerated depth and isolated figures also reflect the physical experience of confinement.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This composition is based on a long and slightly off-axis perspective: making it too regular would make an essential part of its tension disappear.

01

Two lines of beds

The lower partitions repeat on either side and quickly diminish towards the bottom. They structure the room while visually separating patients.

02

The stove as a pivot

The black mass of the stove and its vertical pipe organize the foreground. Around it, chairs and figures form an irregular circle.

03

Red versus green

The orange floor is framed by water greens and gray blues. This opposition colors a place that Van Gogh could have treated in a dull range.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F646/JH1686 is the large interior view of the hospital, to be distinguished from The Court of Arles Hospital F519 painted during the same period.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must balance the architectural design, discreet silhouettes and floor material in order to maintain the expressive depth of the room.

  • The convergence of beams, partitions and floor lines
  • The black mass of the stove and its pipe
  • The difference between seated patients and standing figures
  • The two nuns placed towards the back
  • The contrast of the orange floor with the greens and blues gray
