Asters W627hand painted reproduction

A bouquet of white, purple and yellow asters overflows from a blue and white vase placed on a dark red round table. The flowers occupy more than half of the canvas and stand out against a golden brown background covered with free touches. Painted in 1880, this 83.2 × 68 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art under the number M.2025.64.19 and corresponds to Wildenstein 627.

Look at the work

Autumn bouquet bursts over Japanese vase

The radiant flower heads accumulate into an almost spherical mass, wider than the vase. A few stems escape towards the edges, while the vertical reflection of the container appears on the dark surface of the table.

The white petals receive blue, pink, yellow and gray. The deep foliage serves as shade between the flowers. The cold vase and the red table create two colorful supports under the bouquet.

Each aster is a small explosion of touches, but the whole thing is held together by the dark mass of leaves, the narrow vase and the red circle of the table.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately overflowing floral mass

The bouquet goes well beyond the vase and approaches the upper edges. This magnitude transforms still life into an almost monumental presence.

02

The Japanese vase as a vertical axis

Its blue and white decor brings the stems together and offers a cold counterpoint to the browns at the bottom and the red of the table.

03

Petals painted in fragments

Monet does not enclose flowers in contours. Light touches radiate around yellow or brown centers and mingle with the foliage.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only reference image of LACMA is a real WebP of 2,100 × 2,560 px preserved at its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Maintain the diversity of asters

Flowers should vary in size, orientation and color, with warm, cool whites rather than a repeated pattern.

Color02

Preserve the reflection of the vase on the table

This light vertical passage connects the object to the dark red surface and gives depth to the bottom of the composition.

Matter03

Keep the brown background nuanced

It mixes ocher, gray, green and red and should not be replaced by a uniform dark solid.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

LACMA documents Asters, oil on canvas from 1880, 83.19 × 67.95 cm, donation from the A. Jerrold Perenchio collection, inventory M.2025.64.19 and Wildenstein 627 catalog.

Period01

The large set of still lifes from 1880-1882

Monet then painted several large canvases, each devoted to a floral species, including sunflowers, chrysanthemums and these autumn asters.

Japonism02

A vase linked to Monet's taste for Japanese ceramics

LACMA brings its shape and decor closer to the creations of Makuzu Kôzan, noticed at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878.

Collection03

The Don A. Jerrold Perenchio

The work joined the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with this important impressionist and modern collection and bears inventory M.2025.64.19.
