Lilas, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · April - May 1887 · Paris

Lilac, F286bReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two clusters of lilacs, one white and the other pink, spread directly on an orange-red background; the large green leaves and the "Vincent" signature transform this small bouquet into an exercise in contrasts.

Look at the work

Lilacs lying flat on an orange field

The white cluster occupies the upper part, while the pink mass descends towards the lower edge. No vase appears: flowers and leaves are arranged like a plant motif seen up close.

The orange-red background remains visible between the shapes and bears large brush marks. The leaves change from dark green to yellow green; small touches of cream, pink and purple build the hundreds of petals.

The study published in 2026 by the Van Gogh Museum identifies this still life as F286b, dated April - May 1887 in Paris, and analyzes its red signature "Vincent".

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This small oil on canvas measures approximately 27 × 34.5 cm and also bears the reference JH1294.

01

A composition without a container

The lilacs occupy the entire space as if they were placed in front of the painter. The absence of vase makes the arrangement flatter and more decorative.

02

Red amplifies greens

The orange-red background and green leaves form a complementary contrast. The light flowers then become the brightest areas.

03

The signature belongs to the painting

"Vincent" appears in red in the lower left corner. The museum study compares it to the artist's other painted signatures between 1886 and 1888.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The recent scientific publication provides tight dating, dimensions, reference F and observations on the signature.

Dating

April - May 1887

The painting belongs to the Parisian spring, when Van Gogh simultaneously explores bouquets, gardens and a much more vivid palette.

Signature

"Vincent" in red

The first name alone, placed in the lower left corner, corresponds to the way in which the artist signed several works intended for the French market.

Format

Approximately 27 × 34.5 cm

This small dimension concentrates the effect on the direct dialogue between two flowering clusters, a few leaves and a single colored plane.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the vibrant orange background, the two distinct white and pink masses, as well as the numerous short touches which suggest each petal.

  • The white lilac cluster
  • The great pink mass
  • Dark green and yellow leaves
  • The orange-red background visible
  • The signature "Vincent" at the bottom left
