Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Vincent van Gogh · 1887 · Asnières-sur-Seine

The Bank with Trees, F291Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh frames a bank of the Seine very closely in Asnières. The trunks cut off the view, the slope descends towards the river and brief touches of pink, yellow, green and blue make a landscape vibrate without character.

Look at the work

A clear bank crossed by the trunks

The large central tree divides the canvas, while a second leaning trunk opens the left part. Between them, a strip of pale water and the opposite bank are enough to locate the scene on the banks of the Seine.

The slope occupies almost the entire foreground. Van Gogh does not unify it: oblique touches of mauve, yellow and blue follow the relief, while dark grasses form tighter bouquets.

Painted in 1887 in Asnières, this oil on canvas measuring 37 × 45.5 cm is listed F291/JH1314. It is exhibited at the Rijksmuseum under number SK-C-1844.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work transforms a very simple pattern into an experience of color and rhythm. The shapes remain legible, but each part of the soil, foliage and trunks receives a different direction of touch.

01

The central trunk stops then restarts the gaze

Its pink and brown vertical shares the composition, while small branches and grasses lead the eye on both sides.

02

Slope replaces horizon

The inclined ground rises almost to the upper edge; the Seine appears only as a thin blue breath behind the trees.

03

Light colors shape the terrain

Lemon yellow, lilac pink, blue and green are placed side by side. Their juxtaposition illuminates the bank without resorting to broad brown shadows.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Rijksmuseum today titles the work Riverbank with Trees and identifies it as a close-up view of the Seine near Asnières, painted during Van Gogh's Parisian summer.

Identification

F291 and JH1314

These references and the number SK-C-1844 distinguish this horizontal canvas from the numerous tree studies painted by Van Gogh in 1887.

Collection

A loan from the De Boer collection

The painting was presented at the Rijksmuseum on loan from Boer's Stichting Collectie P. & N.

Period

Learning color in Paris

The museum highlights here the attempt at brighter colors, short touches and modern framing after the discovery of the Impressionists.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the tight framing, the inclination of the ground and the small colored touches without thickening the trunks or darkening the bank.

  • The pink trunk in the center
  • The diagonal of the slope
  • The thin strip of the Seine
  • Dark green grass bouquets
  • The purple and yellow touches of the ground
