Vincent van Gogh · November 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Saint-Paul Asylum Garden, F659Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Pines with gnarled trunks stand on ocher-red earth, bordered by a blue path and the yellow wall of the asylum; Van Gogh uses color contrasts to give the garden inner tension.

Look at the work

St Paul's garden charged with emotion

The trees form a tight screen in the foreground. Their sinuous trunks, highlighted in black, intersect with the branches and benches, revealing only a few strips of land.

On the right, the blue path leads to a door at the foot of the yellow building. Ocher red, gray green, black and blue are juxtaposed in curved, hatched touches that keep the entire surface moving.

Van Gogh paints regularly in the clinic garden when he is not allowed out. He explains to Émile Bernard that the accord of ocher red, saddened gray green and black outlines reflects a feeling of anxiety.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum dates this large painting from November 1889 and records it under s0196V1962. The references F659/JH1850 and the format of 72 × 91 cm distinguish it from other views of Saint-Paul.

01

Trees that close space

The trunks take center stage and hide the horizon. Their network transforms the garden into a dense space, almost without escape.

02

Contrast as an expression

The red ground, the green foliage, the blue path and the black contours do not seek a neutral imitation: their opposition carries the emotion of the painting.

03

A narrow path to the building

The blue stripe on the right is the main depth of the composition. It guides the gaze between the dark garden and the yellow facade.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice directly links the chromatic choices of the painting to Van Gogh's testimony on the life and emotional state of Saint-Paul patients.

Location

The clinic garden

Van Gogh worked there when a crisis or the rules of the establishment prevented him from painting in the surrounding countryside.

Letter

Ocher red and gray green

In his letter to Bernard, he specifically names these colors and black lines as the means of expressing anxiety.

Provenance

A gift from Paul Gachet fils

The painting was donated in 1954 to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation by Paul Gachet Jr. and today belongs to the museum's collection.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the network of black trunks, the depth of the blue path and the oppositions between ocher red, gray green and yellow, without neutralizing their tension.

  • The gnarled trunks highlighted in black
  • The ocher red floor
  • The blue path on the right
  • The yellow building at the edge of the frame
  • Foliage in curved touches
