Arbres du jardin de l'hôpital Saint-Paul, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · October 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Trees in the garden of Saint-Paul, F642Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two thin pines lead the eye towards a yellow pavilion with green shutters, almost hidden behind the garden. The autumn light divides the ground between a pale path and orange-red earth covered with curved touches.

Look at the work

An oblique path between pine trees and yellow facade

The path enters from the lower left corner then goes up towards the building. Two narrow trunks mark the edge, while a third, blue and strongly inclined, closes the composition on the right.

The dark foliage is worked in thick loops of green, blue and black. The red soil, streaked with yellow and purple, responds to the small red spots that appear among the branches.

The depth is based on a simple and very readable opposition: the clear path advances, the red terrain recedes, and the trunks hold the two zones in the same movement.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This vertical view of Saint-Paul measures 73 × 60 cm. It is referenced F642/JH1798 and is in private collections in Switzerland.

01

The path forms the main diagonal

Its clear border clearly separates the luminous left from the red earth on the right. The line leads towards the windows without mechanically crossing the center of the canvas.

02

Three trunks give three directions

The two central pines remain thin and slightly undulating; the blue trunk of the right edge leans strongly. This asymmetry avoids any colonnade effect.

03

Colorful shadows rather than black

In the foliage and on the ground, dark areas combine blue, green and purple. The yellows of the facade and the path thus appear more intense.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Trees in the Garden of Saint-Paul was painted in October 1889. Its references F642/JH1798 allow it to be distinguished from other views of the same garden.

Series

A pattern available from several angles

In the fall of 1889, Van Gogh painted the trees, walkways and buildings of St. Paul several times. Each catalog number corresponds to a distinct framing.

Architecture

A pavilion only glimpsed

The yellow building remains in the background, fragmented by trunks and foliage. Its alignment of windows and shutters stabilizes the very hectic garden.

Collection

A work kept in private hands

The catalogs today place F642 in private collections in Switzerland. No public museum should therefore be attributed to this version.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the diagonal path, the two central pines, the large inclined blue trunk, the yellow pavilion and the separation between light ground and red earth.

  • The white curve that borders the path
  • The thin blue-green trunks in front of the building
  • The yellow facade and its green shutters
  • The orange, purple and blue touches of the terrain
