Vincent van Gogh · August 1888 · Arles

Three large yellow flowers spring from a green vase on a turquoise background: one is open and radiant, another has lost part of its petals, the third has a dense heart that has reached maturity.
Look at the work
The first bouquet of Arles Sunflowers
The green vase occupies the bottom of the canvas, placed on a brown table. The three flower heads form an asymmetrical triangle that fills almost the entire upper space.
The turquoise at the bottom contrasts its freshness with the yellows and oranges of the flowers. The vase combines bright green, dark green and white, with a deliberately visible material.
Painted in Arles in August 1888, this oil on canvas of 73 × 58 cm is F453/JH1559. The first composition in the series in vase, it belongs to a private collection in the United States.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Before the large bouquets of twelve or fifteen flowers, Van Gogh tests here the monumental impact of only three sunflowers on a turquoise background.
Each flower shows a different state
Radiant petals, ripe heads and declining flowers transform the bouquet into a study of the plant cycle.
Turquoise exalts yellow
The complementarity of blue green and orange yellow gives immediate luminosity to the composition.
The vase anchors the bouquet
Its green and white mass balances large flowers and responds to dark leaves.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Van Gogh's correspondence and catalog F453/JH1559 place this painting at the beginning of the decorative project prepared for the arrival of Paul Gauguin.
The first canvas of the bouquet
Van Gogh first describes three large flowers in a green vase on a light background, before more versions.
Decorate the Yellow House
The Sunflowers were to form a dazzling ensemble in the workshop and the room intended for Gauguin.
F453/JH1559
The turquoise background and the three flowers distinguish this version from the five, twelve and fifteen Sunflowers.
