À propos de l’œuvre

Deux paysannes creusant, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Two Peasant Women Digging, F96Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two bent women work in an open field, one almost in profile and the other leaning towards her. Known documentary photography is monochrome: it allows you to precisely read the silhouettes, gestures and organization of the terrain, without inventing an unattested palette.

Look at the work

Two dark silhouettes gathered in the middle of the field

The woman on the left folds towards the ground, surrounded by her skirt and arms. The one on the right moves her torso diagonally and directs her tool or hands towards the same work area.

An oval basket rests in the foreground. The field occupies almost the entire height under a clear sky; a low line of trees and buildings alone marks the horizon.

Two Peasant Women Digging F96/JH878 is an oil on canvas mounted on a 39 × 55 cm panel painted in Nuenen in July 1885. The work belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Even deprived of color, the composition reveals a strong opposition between the luminous sky and the almost black figures. Van Gogh converges their bodies and the basket towards a work center located in the lower half.

01

The two bodies form an asymmetrical pair

The left figure is compact and rounded; the one on the right is higher and oblique. This difference avoids repetition while showing a common task.

02

The basket fixes the foreground

Its clear oval shape interrupts plant masses and establishes depth. It also suggests harvesting without adding any external narrative to the work.

03

The sky enlarges the silhouettes

The upper light strip is almost half the format. The black backs are cut out with almost graphic force.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F96/JH878 should not be confused with F97/JH876, Two Peasant Women digging up potatoes from the Kroeller-Müller Museum: formats, months, layout and collection differ.

Identification

F96, a painting from July 1885

The catalog gives a format of 39 × 55 cm and a canvas support mounted on panel. The composition today belongs to a private collection.

Document

A monochrome public reference

The available photographic reproduction solidly informs the values, contours and general touch, but it does not allow the exact colors of the painting to be affirmed.

Series

One of Nuenen's worker studies

During the summer of 1885, Van Gogh multiplied drawings and oils of people digging, harvesting or tying wreaths in order to better translate the gesture.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must respect the monochrome reference: two distinct silhouettes, the oval basket, field density, horizon line and gray transitions, without arbitrarily assigning colors to the original.

  • The rounded back of the left figure
  • The diagonal of the right figure
  • The oval basket in the foreground
  • The low horizon line
  • The contrast between light sky and dark clothes
