À propos de l’œuvre
Deux Tournesols coupés, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August -September 1887 · Paris
Two Sunflowers cut, F376Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two cut sunflower flower heads are placed side by side on a blue background: one, dark and compact, shows its seeds tight; the other displays crumpled yellow petals around a green-brown heart.
Look at the work
Two flowers observed like landscapes
Close framing removes stems, vase and table. The flowers almost touch the edges of the canvas and their volumes are constructed by thick curves, impasto and small radiant lines.
The blue of the background slides from turquoise to deep blue. It contrasts its freshness with the yellows, ochres and greens of the flower heads, while remaining covered with visible touches which prevent any flat decorative effect.
Painted in Paris at the end of summer 1887, this 50 × 60 cm oil on canvas is listed F376/JH1331. It belongs to the Kunstmuseum Bern.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh then created four still lifes of cut sunflowers. This Bernese study confronts two states of the flower and prepares the vocabulary of matter and color developed in Arles.
The flower cycle becomes the subject
The darker flower head appears dried out, while the other retains long yellow petals. Their juxtaposition makes the transformation of the plant felt without added narrative.
Blue activates yellows
The complementary opposition increases the luminosity of the petals. The greens serve as intermediaries between the cold bottom and the warm soils of the seeds.
Impasto describes each structure
Small curls at the heart, short lines on the seeds and long commas in the petals give each area its own texture.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Catalog numbers and location in Bern distinguish this painting from F375 at the Metropolitan Museum and the large composition F452.
Four Parisian studies
In late summer 1887, Van Gogh painted two small paintings of two flowers and two larger compositions showing more flower heads.
Sunflowers noticed in Paris
Paul Gauguin owned two small studies from this series and hung them above his bed, before the famous bouquets of Arles.
F376 at the Kunstmuseum Bern
The Bernese Museum keeps the 50 × 60 cm version under the references F376 and JH1331.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy should separately render seeds, petals and leaves, maintain key thickness and maintain blue as an active color, not just a background.
- The dark flower head on the left
- The curved yellow petals
- Seeds in small concentric signs
- The turquoise blue background
- Ocher and green impasto
