Look at the work

Two lying flowers become a laboratory of color and material

The large left flower head forms an almost frontal disc. Its seeds, sepals and petals are constructed by short touches that radiate from the center, while the second flower extends to the right.

Van Gogh removes vase, table and decor. The two flowers occupy the entire field and appear to float on the blue, whose brushstrokes change direction around their contours.

Deux Tournesols, or Sunflowers, is a 43.2 × 61 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris at the end of summer 1887. Work F375/JH1329 is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under number 49.41.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This painting belongs to the four still lifes of cut sunflowers made in Paris in 1887, before the famous bouquets of Arles. The Metropolitan Museum highlights its dialogue with a sketch from the Van Gogh Museum and two other variations in Bern and Otterlo.

01

Blue vibrates complementary yellows

The background changes from light blue to cobalt and midnight blue. Facing it, the lemon yellow, ocher and orange petals appear brighter and thicker.

02

The two flowers offer two viewpoints

The frontal flower head reveals its circular heart; the one on the right shows its lateral volume, its folded petals and the curvature of its stem.

03

The key follows the anatomy of the sunflower

Small tight lines in the center, arcs around the seeds, long commas in the petals: the direction of the brush describes the structure as much as the color.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Number 49.41 and references F375/JH1329 designate the large horizontal canvas of the Met, signed and dated "Vincent 87". It should not be confused with variants F376 and F377.

Series

Four Parisian studies of cut flowers

In 1887 Van Gogh painted four compositions of flat flower heads: a sketch of two flowers, two large versions with two flowers and a canvas with four flowers.

Gauguin

Two small versions hanging above his bed

The Met indicates that Paul Gauguin acquired the two smaller works and kept them in his Parisian apartment until the mid-1890s.

Before Arles

A first exploration of the sunflower motif

These cut flowers precede the bouquets painted for the Yellow House by a year. The subject is already used to experience very intense color contrasts.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the proportions of the two flower heads, the green-brown heart of the frontal flower, the horizontal stem, the curved petals, the signature and the deep variations of blue.

  • The circular heart of the flower on the left
  • Lemon yellow and ocher petals
  • The sunflower in profile on the right
  • The long cut stem
  • The blue background modulated around the flowers
