Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Vincent van Gogh · July 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Two Women across the fieldsReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two female silhouettes advance in a field that fills almost the entire surface. On this small elongated support, Van Gogh juxtaposes lines, dots and dashes of color with a freedom close to drawing.

Look at the work

Two figures lost in the vibration of the field

The very horizontal format lowers the horizon and stretches the step of the two women. One wears a light dress and a yellow hat, the other a dark blue dress. A few houses and trees punctuate the upper band, but most of the composition belongs to herbs.

The support remains visible between the painted marks. Green, yellow, blue and red hatching describes the furrows without forming a continuous surface. Both characters are indicated by rapid outlines, as if captured as they move.

The work retains the energy of a study on the pattern: the emptiness of the support, the discontinuous keys and the stretched format give the field exceptional mobility.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Women Crossing the Fields is housed at the McNay Art Museum under number 1950.49. The work bears the references F819/JH2112 and is distinguished by its panoramic format on paper.

01

A support left visible

Van Gogh does not completely cover the paper. Its light shade acts as an extra color and maintains air between the field hatching.

02

Signs rather than details

Cultures are translated by short parallel lines, dots and commas. These signs change orientation according to the plans and make the different furrows legible.

03

Two complementary silhouettes

The light figure and the blue figure respond to each other. Their opposite colors, their hats and their slightly offset positions are enough to create a walking story in an almost abstract landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

This oil on paper measures 30.3 × 59.7 cm. Painted in Auvers in July 1890, it is cataloged F819/JH2112 and belongs to the McNay Art Museum under the 1950.49 inventory.

Support

A study on paper

Unlike the large paintings of Auvers, this composition is executed on paper then mounted on a support. The clear reserve fully participates in the visual rhythm.

Project

Maybe a preparatory study

The Van Gogh Museum points out that the rapid and unfinished nature of the work may indicate a study for a larger composition that has never been carried out.

Collection

The McNay Legacy

The work entered the San Antonio Museum with the bequest of its founder Marion Koogler McNay. It has since been acquired in number 1950.49.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must retain the unpainted spaces, the fineness of the hatching, the distinct colors of the two women and the general lightness of the support.

  • The light figure with the yellow hat
  • The second woman dressed in blue
  • Multicolored hatching separated by visible paper
  • The narrow strip of trees and houses on the horizon
