À propos de l’œuvre

Vue de l'asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Rémy, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

View of the asylum and the chapel of Saint-RémyReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Beyond a vast blue-gray field appear the white buildings of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole and the Romanesque bell tower. The landscape is deliberately calm: a few yellow trees and ocher millstones are enough to signal the start of autumn.

Look at the work

The bell tower of Saint-Paul beyond the plowed field

The field occupies more than half of the canvas, covered with blue, gray and yellow diagonals. The asylum wall then forms a long horizontal boundary, interrupted by buildings and trees.

The pointed bell tower dominates the architectural group without reaching the top of the painting. Two orange-yellow millstones respond to the autumn foliage, while the turquoise sky is animated by small pink touches.

The construction is based on three clearly hierarchical bands - field, architecture, sky - which the bell tower connects without breaking the serenity of the view.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This oil on canvas measuring 45.2 × 60.3 cm is cataloged F803/JH2124. Painted in the fall of 1889, it remains in a private collection.

01

A foreground left almost empty

No large figure interrupts the field. The oblique keys form a continuous surface which measures the distance to the wall and buildings.

02

The bell tower identifies the place

Its Romanesque tower allows you to recognize Saint-Paul-de-Mausole. This reading replaced an old erroneous identification with a church in Labbeville, near Auvers.

03

The yellows concentrate the season

Trees and millstones carry almost all the warmth of the palette. Their ocher stands out against the gray blue of the field and the pale turquoise of the sky.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

View of the asylum and the chapel of Saint-Rémy measures 45.2 × 60.3 cm. Its references are F803/JH2124.

Identification

A view long linked to Auvers

The painting was once described as a church in Labbeville. The bell tower and the organization of the buildings made it possible to recognize the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole.

Provenance

In Elizabeth Taylor's collection

The actress kept the landscape in her Bel Air home after its purchase in 1963, made through her father, merchant Francis Taylor.

Sale

Lot 12 at Christie's in 2012

Presented at the sale of the Elizabeth Taylor collection, the work reached 10,121,250 pounds, or $15,991,575, then returned to the private collection.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the blue-gray field, the long wall, the Romanesque bell tower, the white buildings, the yellow trees and the two ocher millstones.

  • The fine diagonals that run through the field
  • The silhouette of the bell tower in the center right
  • Orange-yellow trees against white walls
  • The little pink touches scattered in the turquoise sky
