Vase with daisies and anemones, F323Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Look at the work

A free bouquet in a blue vase

The vase occupies the central axis but the bouquet remains deliberately asymmetrical. The stems spread out in a fan shape, the red flowers rise to the right and the white daisies light up the left edge.

The species are not treated in the same way: radiant petals, thick spots and small separate touches make the bouquet come alive without smoothing out irregularities.

Painted in Paris around June 1887, this oil on canvas measuring 61.5 × 38.5 cm is F323/JH1295. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 107.055.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This still life shows how Van Gogh uses flowers to study color contrasts. The blue of the vase and the background reinforces the reds and yellows, while the olive green table warms the bottom of the canvas.

01

The blue vase unites opposing colors

Its simple and fresh shape brings together a very varied bouquet without competing with the reds, yellows, whites and purples of the flowers.

02

The dotted background makes the contours vibrate

Blue, gray and purple touches surround each flower and prevent the bouquet from coming off like a rigid silhouette.

03

The table has a wider material

Its yellow-green brush strokes are wider than those at the bottom, clearly distinguishing the horizontal plane of the wall.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum recalls that Van Gogh painted at least thirty still lifes of flowers during the summer of 1887. The genre allowed him to systematically experiment with color, contrasts and very different types of touches.

Bouquet

Several flowers gathered together

The notice identifies white daisies, yellow flowers, blue lilacs, bright red anemones and possible dark red lilies.

Research

Impressionism and divided touch

Van Gogh combines impressionist light and small dotted touches, but integrates them with more spontaneous and personal writing.

What the painter must preserve

The copy must differentiate each family of flowers, keep the fresh transparency of the blue vase and respect the opposition between the dotted background and the wide touches of the table.

  • White daisies
  • Red anemones
  • The radiant yellow flowers
  • The light blue vase
  • The dotted blue gray background
