Vase avec marguerites et coquelicots, par Vincent van Gogh

Daisy and poppy vaseReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A bouquet overflowing with red poppies, white daisies and blueberries springs from a brown vase placed on a round table. Van Gogh concentrates the wild flowers of the Auvers fields in this still life and contrasts them with a very light green background.

Look at the work

A wild bouquet that overflows from the vase and the frame

The poppies form a large red mass in the center and upper part. On the left, the small blue flowers tighten the bouquet; the white daisies descend towards the table and visually cross the edge of the vase. Several long, thin stems remain isolated on the bottom.

The red-brown vase is constructed by lighter horizontal bands. Its stable volume contrasts with the scattering of flowers and the stems falling to the right. The almost white circle of the table supports the whole without closing the bottom of the composition.

The bouquet combines density and dispersion: a compact red core, then flowers and stems escaping in all directions.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F280 work can be recognized by its large red bouquet, its striped brown earthenware vase, the falling daisies and the sea green background.

01

Three families of flowers

Poppies provide red mass, daisies open white and yellow discs, while blueberries create a tighter blue area to the left.

02

A background left alive

Pale green is not uniform. Wide, lighter passages and some areas of visible canvas give air around the corollas.

03

The table as a base

Its blue-gray arch frames the base of the vase and makes the hanging stems legible. This semi-circle calms the composition without becoming a detailed decoration.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

This Auvers still life is cataloged F280 and JH2032. Google Arts & Culture presents it today in the collection of the Song Art Museum in Beijing.

Period

A still life of recent weeks

Van Gogh painted several bouquets in Auvers in June 1890, in the middle of a production mainly devoted to landscapes and portraits.

Subject

Field flowers

The mix of poppies, daisies and small blue flowers gives the bouquet a picked character rather than composed according to the rules of a living room arrangement.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the irregular shape of the bouquet, the distribution of the three families of flowers and the overflowing stems, without transforming this lively picking into a symmetrical arrangement.

  • The dense core of red and orange poppies
  • The blueberry area concentrated on the left
  • The white daisies that descend towards the table
  • The light strips of the vase and the long hanging stems on the right
