Poppy field W677hand painted reproduction

A meadow dotted with poppies rises towards a line of trees under a blue sky covered with clouds. Painted in Vétheuil in 1881, this oil on canvas measuring 58 × 79 cm is kept at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam under number 2611 (MK) and corresponds to Wildenstein 677.

Look at the work

Poppies transform the field into a colorful rhythm

Monet lowers the horizon so that the meadow occupies almost two thirds of the canvas. The red flowers form neither bouquets nor rows: they appear in spaced touches, wider in the foreground and tighter as the ground rises.

To the right, a large dark tree balances the opening of the sky. The yellow greens of the grass, the blues of the distance and the pure reds of the flowers circulate without closed contours. A few tiny silhouettes give the scale of the landscape without interrupting its continuity.

In W677, the poppy is not described flower by flower: each red accent measures the depth of the field and makes the vibration of summer visible.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A horizon placed very high

The grassy slope invades the visual field and brings the viewer closer to the motif. However, the sky retains enough space to let the trees breathe and illuminate the whole.

02

Red as a depth tool

The scarlet touches in the foreground are more distinct; in the distance, they become small dots. This variation in size constructs distance without drawn perspective.

03

The tree as a counterweight

The vertical mass on the right retains the composition. Its deep greens respond to the groves of the horizon and prevent the clear meadow from appearing uniform.

Read this specific version

The sheet uses a single exact image of W677. The file is a real WebP of 3,000 × 2,194 px, reduced from a source of 5,209 × 3,809 px and never artificially enlarged.

Composition01

Respect the dispersion of flowers

Poppies should remain irregular, with visible green intervals. Too regular decorative distribution would remove the sensation of a field observed on the spot.

Color02

Preserve the diversity of greens

The meadow mixes yellow, olive, emerald and blue. A single green would crush the planes and cause the light circulating between the grass to lose.

Matter03

Keep the red touches sharp

The flowers are placed in brief accents, sometimes almost pure. They should neither be surrounded nor melted in the foliage, because their relative sharpness animates the entire surface.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen documents this Poppy Field from 1881, oil on canvas of 58 × 79 cm, inventory 2611 (MK) and Wildenstein catalog 677.

Location01

A painting made in Vétheuil

The museum's notice places the execution in Vétheuil, a village in the Seine valley where Monet lived from 1878 to 1881. The sloping fields become a laboratory of light and color.

Acquisition02

The DG van Beuningen collection

The work entered the museum in 1958 with the collection of the industrialist and patron Daniël George van Beuningen. Its number 2611 (MK) precisely fixes this version.

Pattern03

Flowers reduced to luminous touches

The museum highlights how poppies are rendered with small, bright accents. Their role is as much spatial as botanical: they chant the meadow to the horizon.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 677 version
  • The clear slope that occupies the foreground
  • Red poppies of decreasing size
  • The large dark tree that balances the right side
