The poppies do not form a regular sheet: their red touches emerge in groups in the grass, while a clear path leads the eye towards the trees and houses in the distance. Signed and dated Claude Monet 81, this oil on canvas measuring 58 × 79 cm is kept at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam under number 2611 (MK) and corresponds to Wildenstein 677.

An open meadow where red measures depth

The foreground is an expanse of green, yellow and brown grass crossed by an oblique gap. The nearest poppies are broad vermilion accents; they become smaller and more spaced apart as the ground rises towards the trees.

The sky occupies almost half of the canvas. Its pale blues, chalky whites and purple grays respond to the folded greens of the field. The low horizon line lets the light breathe and gives the landscape its tranquil breadth.

The floral pattern is never decorative: the size and spacing of the red touches become a real distance scale in the middle of the meadow.
