À propos de l’œuvre

Vase de fleurs, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · May 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Vase of FlowersReproduction of oil painting on canvas

White, pink and red flowers crowd into a pale green vase, placed on Doctor Gachet's red table. The blue-black contours and large areas of color give the bouquet an almost cut-out presence.

Look at the work

A quick bouquet on Gachet's red table

The round vase occupies the entire width of the lower part. Its narrow neck brings together a few stems before the flowers unfold in irregular clusters, up to the upper edge of the canvas.

The blue green wall, the red-brown table and the light green vase form three large areas. On this simple structure, the flowers are indicated by thick touches and surrounded by deliberately visible blue lines.

The summary appearance is not a sign of incompleteness: Van Gogh simplifies the shapes to make contour, color and material act together.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum preserves this still life under the inventory s0109V1962. Dated May 1890, it bears the references F764a/JH2046.

01

Barely individualized flowers

Van Gogh does not seek to name each species. Corollas are distinguished above all by their volume, their orientation and their accord of white, pink or red.

02

The outline as a color element

The blue-black lines isolate the vase, leaves and bouquets. They flatten the space and recall the artist's constant interest in Japanese prints.

03

Deliberately fast execution

The wide and lightly repeated touches correspond to the freer way adopted in Auvers. The museum specifies that this economy of detail does not mean that the painting is unfinished.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Vase of flowers is an oil on canvas measuring 42.2 × 29 cm, painted in Auvers in May 1890. It bears the inventory s0109V1962 and the references F764a/JH2046.

Location

Painted at Doctor Gachet's house

The bouquet was painted in the house of Paul-Ferdinand Gachet, doctor, collector and new friend of Van Gogh. The red table visible under the vase belonged to the doctor's garden.

Auvers

One of the last still lifes

Arriving in Auvers on May 20, Van Gogh mainly painted landscapes but also made several bouquets, for his pleasure and sometimes to offer them to those around him.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the contrast between the green-blue background and the red table, the round silhouette of the vase, the dark contours and the direct character of the impasto.

  • The pale green vase surrounded by a thick blue-black outline
  • White flowers grouped in the upper part
  • The pink and red masses that balance the bouquet
  • The red-brown stripe of Doctor Gachet's table
