Claude Monet · 1881 - around 1920 · W626

W626 flower vasehand painted reproduction

A bouquet of pink and white mauves overflows from a green vase placed at the edge of a light table. The flowers disperse in front of an indeterminate background, blue, yellow and cream, where the shapes seem to dissolve. Monet began this great still life in 1881, kept it for around forty years in his workshop then took it back before signing and selling it around 1920. The oil on canvas measures 100.4 × 81.8 cm; it is kept at the Courtauld Gallery under the number P.1932.SC.275 and corresponds to Wildenstein 626.

Look at the work

An unstable bouquet that seems to advance towards the viewer

The vase is offset to the right and seen from a slightly elevated point. The longest stem goes to the left, while the flowers in the center fan-shaped. This asymmetry avoids the frontal presentation of a traditional still life.

Purples are not defined by continuous contours. White, pink, lilac, green and blue are placed in thick touches and superimposed. The table and background receive the same light colors, so that bouquet, container and space respond to each other.

The difficulty of the painting becomes its strength: the flowers, the vase and the table seem both solidly painted and on the verge of blending into the light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately off-center composition

The vase does not occupy the axis and the bouquet extends mainly to the left. This apparent imbalance gives the pattern a more immediate presence.

02

Two visible painting campaigns

Courtauld reports that Monet returned to the web after several decades. Some leaves and petals show late material placed on an already old layer.

03

Wild mallows rather than a living room bouquet

The irregular stems, open flowers and small green touches retain the abundant appearance of freshly picked plants.

Composition01

Keep the green vase at the bottom of the composition

Its dark mass anchors the bouquet without turning black or losing its blue-green reflections.

Color02

Preserve stem fan

Side branches and clear intervals prevent flowers from forming a compact block.

Matter03

Keep material recovery

The denser impasto of certain petals must remain visible, because they testify to the long genesis of W626.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Courtauld Gallery documents Vase of flowers, started in 1881 and taken up around 1920, oil on canvas of 100.4 × 81.8 cm, inventory P.1932.SC.275 and Wildenstein catalog 626.

Genesis01

A painting kept for almost forty years in the workshop

Monet considers the bouquet difficult, leaves the painting unfinished then returns to it at the end of his life. Differences in material make this story perceptible.

Subject02

A large bouquet of pink and white mauves

The wild flower allows a free organization, made of branches, voids and petals which merge with the bottom.

Collection03

Gift of Samuel Courtauld in 1932

Samuel Courtauld purchased the work in 1923. He then gave it to the collection which today bears the number P.1932.SC.275.
