À propos de l’œuvre
Vase de roses, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · May 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Vase of rosesReproduction of oil painting on canvas
An exuberant bouquet of white roses invades almost the entire canvas. Beneath these now light tones was a more vivid opposition: the flowers were pink, facing the cool green of the background.
Look at the work
A bouquet so large that it overflows into space
The terracotta vase is placed in the center of a pale green table. The stems spread out in a fan shape and bear open flowers, buds and dark leaves; several branches are cut by the edges of the canvas.
The mint green background has long diagonal touches. The petals are constructed by white, cream and pink impasto, while the leaves mix deep green, blue and almost black contours.
Composition is not a still study: the diagonals of the bottom, the curved stems and the thickness of the petals give the bouquet the momentum of a still growing plant.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The National Gallery of Art preserves this great still life under number 1991.67.1. It corresponds to F681/JH1976 and is one of the two bouquets of roses painted before the departure from Saint-Rémy.
Roses that were once pink
The organic red color of the petals has faded over time. Originally, the pink flowers formed a more intense complementary contrast with the green of the background.
A very thick material
Van Gogh places the whites in ribbons and small thick ridges. This material catches the light, distinguishes each corolla and explains why the canvas had to dry for a long time.
A background that sets the bouquet in motion
The diagonal touches of the wall do not describe any precise decoration. Their regular direction responds to the stems, avoids the immobility of a flat area and makes the floral mass shine.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Vase of roses is an oil on canvas of 71 × 90 cm, painted in Saint-Rémy in May 1890. It bears the inventory 1991.67.1 and the references F681/JH1976.
One of two large bouquets of roses
Van Gogh painted two canvases of roses at the end of his stay in the asylum. This horizontal version should not be confused with the other floral still lifes of 1889.
Left in Saint-Rémy on May 16
The paint was so thick that Van Gogh could not take it away when he left. He wrote that the asylum employee would send the two canvases after they had dried; they arrived in Auvers before June 24.
Gift of Pamela Harriman
Pamela Harriman donated the work to the National Gallery of Art in memory of W. Averell Harriman. Today it has the accession number 1991.67.1.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the horizontal format of the original, the impasto of the corollas, the differentiated greens of the foliage and the discreet pink traces still visible in the petals.
- The large white corollas with pink and green shadows
- The dark leaves that structure the bouquet
- The terracotta vase placed in the center
- The diagonal touches of the mint green background
