Palazzo Dario appears not as an isolated facade, but as a colorful mass caught between a large dark stake and the light of the Grand Canal. The domes of Santa Maria della Salute emerge on the left, while the palace dissolves into blues, pinks and greens that the water extends to the edge of the canvas.
Look at the work
A vertical mooring pile cuts almost the entire height near the center and separates the distant domes from the main facade. Other thinner posts punctuate the left bank. The palace, slightly offset to the right, appears frontally but remains surrounded by air and water.
The walls receive orange roses, pale yellows and cool purples. The channel mixes these same tones with turquoise greens and denser blues. Monet avoids the exact repetition of the reflection: each colored band moves and expands the architectural forms.
Palazzo Dario in W1757 appears to float because the same network of colors connects the palace, atmosphere and canal.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The strong dark vertical does not mask the subject; it organizes the distance between the viewer and the bank. On the left, it frames the Salute. On the right, it accentuates the brightness of Palazzo Dario and prevents the view from becoming a simple decorative panorama.
The Art Institute notice emphasizes that Monet responds to Venetian clichés by emphasizing the painting itself. The edges of the palace remain supple, the windows are reduced to accents and the colors seem to undulate the stone like the surface of water.
The lower register is no less worked than the facade. The horizontal keys alternate blue, green, pink and yellow, with interruptions that suggest the current. This diversity must remain visible in an oil reproduction.

The large central pile and thinner posts on the left create several planes. The distant dome, the masts and the facade form a progression which gives depth despite the low height of the horizon.
The warmth of the palate contrasts with the blues of the sky without any clear break. Intermediate purples and greens unite the two areas and give the light a humid quality.
Brush marks follow the walls and stakes in the upper half. They become wider and horizontal in the channel, where the colors overlap without losing their individuality.

Venice, Palazzo Dario is a 1908 oil on canvas measuring 66.2 × 81.8 cm. It belongs to the European paintings and sculptures of the Art Institute of Chicago.
The work entered the Chicago collections in 1933 through the bequest of Martin A. Ryerson. Number 1933.446 must accompany the title so as not to confuse it with the other frames of the palace.
Monet recognized the difficulty of painting a city already full of famous images. Here, he renews the motif by bringing architecture and reflection together, to the point of making colored light the real subject.
