Vincent van Gogh · May -June 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Wild roses, F597Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Five white roses emerge from a compact carpet of green leaves; Van Gogh contrasts the naturalistic fragility of corollas with large plant forms surrounded by an almost decorative dark blue.

Look at the work

Fragile flowers in constructed foliage

The roses are distributed without bouquet or vase: they grow in the middle of the leaves and some are cut by the edges. The close-up view eliminates almost any depth.

The petals remain supple, shaped by white, cream and yellow. Conversely, the leaves become flat angular areas separated by heavy blue-green contours.

This peaceful image is born during a serious crisis experienced at the Saint-Rémy clinic. As soon as he has the strength, Van Gogh returns to the gardens to paint or draw, finding in the vegetation a reason for recovery.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The small canvas measuring 24.5 × 33.5 cm is inventoried s0190V1962 by the Van Gogh Museum and bears the references F597/JH2011.

01

Two treatments in the same canvas

The flowers are delicately painted, while the foliage adopts flat, strongly surrounded shapes.

02

A framing without horizon

No sky or ground locates the scene. The viewer looks directly into the vegetation, as if in front of a continuous decorative motif.

03

White animated by color

Yellows, blues and greens appear in the petals and prevent roses from becoming white spots without volume.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum notice precisely links the apparent serenity of the motif to the difficult period experienced by Van Gogh in the establishment of Saint-Rémy.

Context

Painted after a serious crisis

Van Gogh seeks calm at the clinic and returns to work in his gardens as soon as his condition allows.

Contrast

Naturalistic flowers, stylized leaves

The museum highlights this difference in treatment, essential to the visual tension of the small composition.

Japonism

Flat and blue outlines

The tight framing, lack of background and circled silhouettes are reminiscent of solutions admired in Japanese prints.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should distinguish the suppleness of the roses from the geometry of the leaves, preserve the dark blue contours and avoid uniform white in the petals.

  • The five open roses
  • The Golden Yellow Hearts
  • Angular green leaves
  • Dark blue outlines
  • The green background without horizon
