Look at the work

A nude lying in the space of an oval

The body crosses the canvas from left to right, legs slightly bent to the face framed by brown hair. Raised arms extend the curve of the upper edge.

The sheet and pillow take up almost all the space. Long turquoise blue hatching enlivens the background and shadows of the laundry, while a terracotta strip at the bottom of the bed warms up the range.

Painted during the Parisian period, this work shows Van Gogh working on the nude and figure in an unusual format. The oval tightens the framing and transforms the bed into a vast field of light touches.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Barnes Foundation keeps this painting under inventory BF720. The references F330/JH1214, the dating of March 1887 and the oval format of 59.7 × 73.7 cm establish its identity.

01

The oval as an envelope

The curved edge follows the body and mattress, removing angles where the gaze might escape. The figure appears contained in an intimate space.

02

Whites crossed with blue

Sheet, pillow and wall are not painted pure white. Blue, gray and cream hatching build volumes and connect the body to its environment.

03

A flexible diagonal

The elongated body structures the entire composition, but the knees, waist and arms introduce several inflections which avoid a rigid pose.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Barnes Foundation notice makes it possible to distinguish this oval nude from the numerous model studies carried out by Van Gogh during his two years in Paris.

Format

An oval canvas

The format is an essential element of the work: it brings the edge of the body closer together and gives the bed an almost enveloping shape.

Period

Paris, March 1887

Van Gogh then explored lighter colors and a divided touch through contact with modern French art.
