Autoportrait au chapeau de paille, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1887 · Paris

Self-portrait with straw hat, F526Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Under a large yellow hat, Van Gogh turns his head slightly and stares at the viewer; the red beard, the blue jacket and the background covered with short touches show how much his palette has brightened in Paris.

Look at the work

A face built by color

The hat occupies almost the entire width of the small panel and forms a luminous disk above the face. Its edge casts a shadow on the forehead, focusing the gaze around the green eyes.

The beard is made of orange, yellow and brown lines, while the jacket mixes ultramarine blue, purple and white. Behind the head, red, green and gray hatching vibrates an undecorated background.

Unable to regularly pay for models, Van Gogh often painted himself. In Paris, the self-portrait also became a laboratory where he experienced the light colors and divided touches discovered among the Impressionists.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Detroit Institute of Arts maintains this portrait under number 22.13. The panel-mounted cardboard support, dimensions of 34.9 × 26.7 cm and references F526/JH1309 establish its identity.

01

The hat as a source of light

The intense yellow of the headgear visually illuminates the entire composition. Its long streaks follow the shape of the straw and reinforce its volume.

02

Very active complements

Orange and blue, red and green respond to each other in the face, beard, jacket and background. The contrasts give the small portrait an immediate presence.

03

A more precise look than clothing

The eyes, nose and mouth are carefully articulated, while the jacket remains wide and summary. This hierarchy directs all attention towards expression.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum's notice documents this painting as one of Van Gogh's Parisian self-portraits and specifies its importance in the history of American collections.

Acquisition

Entered Detroit in 1922

The DIA purchased the portrait at the Kélékian collection sale; it became the first American public museum to acquire a painting by Van Gogh.

Support

Cardboard mounted on wood

The artist paints on rigid cardboard then attached to a panel, a support different from the canvas usually associated with his portraits.

Context

The Paris Summer of 1887

Van Gogh then works with a lighter range and a fragmented touch, while maintaining a very personal facial shape.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the shine of the hat, the variety of oranges of the beard and the concentrated look, without standardizing the multicolored hatching of the background.

  • The large striated yellow hat
  • Green eyes under the shaded edge
  • The red beard in short touches
  • The blue-purple jacket
  • The background animated with red and green
