À propos de l’œuvre

Autoportrait, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · August-September 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Self-portrait with palette, F626Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh represents himself in a painter's blouse, palette and brushes clenched in his hand. His pale green face, his red beard and his oblique gaze stand out against a blue background crossed by long radiant touches.

Look at the work

The painter at work in front of a moving background

The bust faces to the left, but the eyes return directly to the viewer. The palette appears in the lower corner with a few small masses of color and several brush handles.

Around the head, the blue touches follow the contours of the skull, ear and shoulders. The background does not describe any place: it acts as an energy that isolates and intensifies the figure.

Painted in Saint-Rémy in 1889, this self-portrait in oil on canvas measuring 57.8 × 44.5 cm is F626/JH1770. It belongs to the National Gallery of Art under number 1998.74.5.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The picture is based on two oppositions: the orange of the hair against the bruises, then the tension of the gaze against the continuous movement of the brush. The blouse and the background seem to belong to the same material.

01

The gaze resists movement

Frowning and sideways eyes remain the most stable point in the middle of long curved touches.

02

The red beard activates bruises

Orange, red and yellow around the face contrastively reinforce the cobalt of the blouse and the background.

03

Palette and brushes affirm the profession

Van Gogh does not only show himself as a model: the visible tools make the image a portrait of the painter returning to his work.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The National Gallery of Art ranks F626 among Van Gogh's last self-portraits, taken at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum after a serious crisis which kept him away from painting.

Series

One of the last three self-portraits

Van Gogh painted three known effigies in August and September 1889, including the Oslo version and that of the Musée d'Orsay.

Color

A purple turned blue

Van Gogh described a dark purple-blue background. National Gallery research indicates that the gradual disappearance of the red pigment made it much bluer.

Collection

The 1998 Don Whitney

Mr. and Mrs. John Hay Whitney acquired the painting in 1947 before donating it to the National Gallery of Art.

  • The oblique gaze
  • The orange and red beard
  • The radiant touches of the background
  • The blue blouse tied around the neck
  • The palette and brushes
