Zinnias et géraniums dans un vase, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris
Zinnias and geraniums in a vase, F241Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A vertical bouquet of yellow, orange, white and pink zinnias rises in front of a black-brown background. The red geraniums break the arrangement on the sides, while the green vase and the multi-colored table prolong the vibration of the flowers.
Look at the work
Bouquet expands in stages above narrow vase
Larger zinnias congregate in the center, then thinner stems reach the edges. A red branch descends to the left and several isolated flowers move away to the right, preventing any symmetry.
The turquoise green cylindrical vase appears almost transparent in places. Its dark saucer and the thick touches of the table form a stable base under the multitude of small corollas.
Zinnias and geraniums in a vase F241/JH1134 is a Parisian still life from the summer of 1886, measuring 61 × 45.9 cm. The National Gallery of Canada preserves it under number 5045.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The dark background still belongs to the Dutch way, but the complementary contrasts, the light touch and the red signature testify to the research carried out in Paris.
Each zinnia has its own center
Yellows, oranges, whites and salmon radiate around small, darker stones. This repetition orders the bouquet without uniformizing the flowers.
Reds shift balance
The geraniums on the left, a few petals on the right and the signature create three separate reminders that run across the entire height of the canvas.
The table reflects the color of the bouquet
Touches of green, red and ocher circulate around the base of the vase. The foreground thus acts as a muffled echo of the flowers.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F241/JH1134, the format of 61 × 45.9 cm and the number 5045 distinguish this vertical bouquet of F251, another composition of zinnias preserved in Ottawa.
Two paintings of zinnias, two compositions
F241 is vertical and combines zinnias and geraniums; F251 adopts a horizontal format with other flowers. The catalog number avoids confusion.
"Vincent" appears in red at the bottom right
The signature is painted in the same range as the geraniums and integrates with the table's key network.
The flowers become a chromatic laboratory
During the summer of 1886, Van Gogh multiplied the bouquets in order to study lighter colors and complementary contrasts.
