Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris

Zinnias and geraniums in a vase, F241Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Look at the work

The flowers advance in colorful clusters in front of an almost black background

The round zinnias form the heart of the bouquet, but Van Gogh breaks all symmetry: a red stem plunges to the left, two orange flowers isolate to the right and the leaves rise in points to the upper edge.

The cylindrical vase, streaked with turquoise green and brown, rests on a dark saucer. The table is not a flat area: its red, green and ocher touches take up the colors of the bouquet and extend its vibration to the foreground.

Zinnias and geraniums in a vase F241/JH1134 is a Parisian still life from the summer of 1886, measuring 61 × 45.9 cm. Purchased in 1950, it is kept in Ottawa under number 5045.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh used flowers as a color laboratory during his first year in Paris. The dark background still retains the gravity of the Dutch works, but the orange-green and red-green accords announce a brighter palette.

01

The corollas are built in small radiant touches

Each zinnia has a compact center surrounded by short petals. The yellows, oranges, whites and salmon do not mix completely, which keeps the flowers distinct.

02

The bouquet deliberately overflows from its axis

Red geraniums and leaning flowers create several lateral exits. This asymmetry gives the impression of a bouquet observed in its natural state rather than composed with rigidity.

03

The green vase connects flowers and table

Its reflections take up the leaves while its red lines respond to the petals and the signature. It acts as a colored hinge between the two halves of the painting.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F241/JH1134, the format of 61 × 45.9 cm and the number 5045 distinguish this vertical bouquet of F251, another vase of zinnias kept in the same museum.

Ottawa

The museum preserves two compositions of zinnias

F241 is vertical and combines zinnias and geraniums; F251 is horizontal and brings together zinnias with other flowers. The two close titles therefore designate different works.

Signature

"Vincent" closes the lower right corner

The red signature is fully integrated into the table keys. It responds to the geraniums placed on the left and the red accents of the vase.

Paris

Bouquets serve as chromatic exercises

In Paris, Van Gogh painted numerous flowers to try complementary oppositions and a clearer touch to contact with modern painting.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the individualized zinnias, the eccentric red geraniums, the black-brown background, the striated green vase, the multicolored table and the red signature.

  • The large orange and yellow zinnias in the center
  • The red geranium branch falling to the left
  • The small white flowers between the warm masses
  • The turquoise green streaks of the cylindrical vase
  • The red signature in the lower right corner
