Les Tournesols, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · August 1888 · Arles

The Sunflowers of London, F454Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Fifteen sunflowers at different stages of maturity overflow from a yellow vase signed "Vincent". The background, table, vase and flowers vary almost a single color, but the material and nuances prevent any monotony.

Look at the work

A yellow on yellow bouquet that has become emblematic

The largest flower heads form an irregular crown around the bouquet. Some keep their petals, others have become heavy seed heads, which introduces the passage of time into still life.

The light vase widens upwards and bears the blue signature. A thin blue line separates the table from the wall; this tiny contrast is enough to stabilize the entire yellow accord.

Painted in Arles in August 1888, this 92.1 × 73 cm oil on canvas is F454/JH1562. It belongs to the National Gallery in London under number NG3863.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh draws a great diversity from a deliberately restricted vocabulary. The yolks change temperature, while the direction of the brush describes petals, leaves, seeds, vase and background separately.

01

The fifteen flowers tell the story of a cycle

Buttons, open corollas and faded heads coexist in the bouquet. Each flower thus has its own silhouette and texture.

02

Impasto makes the seeds almost tactile

Small, thick, repeated touches bristle the large brown discs, in contrast to the calmer flat areas of the wall and table.

03

A blue line balances all the yellow

This horizontal line behind the vase and the blue signature create two decisive cold accents in the composition.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

This London version belongs to the first group of four bouquets painted during the last week of August 1888. Van Gogh intended F454 and the Munich version for Paul Gauguin's room in the Yellow House.

Version

The F454/JH1562 canvas

Its fifteen flowers and its yellow background make it possible to distinguish it from versions with a turquoise background, repetitions from January 1889 and Parisian studies of cut flowers.

Project

The decoration of the Yellow House

Van Gogh imagined a set of large sunflower panels to accommodate Gauguin and give an identity to the future Midi workshop.

Collection

Purchased in 1924

The National Gallery acquired the painting with the help of the Courtauld Fund. Its inventory number is NG3863.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must differentiate the fifteen flowers, restore the impasto of the seeds and maintain the yellow on yellow agreement without losing the blue line or the signature.

  • The fifteen sunflowers
  • The large seed discs
  • The yellow hatched background
  • The thin blue line
  • The "Vincent" signature on the vase
