Look at the work

The uniform becomes an architecture of red, blue and green

The body forms a large pyramid. The face and cap occupy the top, the arms descend symmetrically towards the hands, then the red pants widen to the crossed legs.

The background remains deliberately bare: irregular white wall, green stripe on the right, brown tile floor. This simplicity focuses all attention on the uniform and the calm but massive posture of the model.

Painted in Arles in June 1888, Le Zouave assis is an oil on canvas measuring 81 × 65 cm, referenced F424/JH1488. The work belongs to a private collection in Argentina.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh renounces the picturesque setting here. The figure is constructed by large colored areas surrounded by dark lines, while the material of the wall and pants keeps the visible trace of the brush.

Red pants dominate the format

Its very broad shape occupies almost the entire lower half and gives the soldier a monumental foundation, despite the simplicity of the pose.

Jacket focuses uniform details

The orange soutaches, red stripes, green belt and light buttons stand out against an almost black blue.

White wall is never uniform

Beiges, grays, pinks and chalky touches make up a living surface, neutral enough to advance the colors of the model.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

In his letter to Theo dated June 21, 1888, Van Gogh announced that he had finally found a model: a zouave. He first describes a bust portrait, then specifies that the second canvas will show the soldier sitting full-length against a white wall.

Model

A trumpet from the third regiment

The notes of the edition of the Letters identify the uniform as that of a soldier and trumpet of the third Zouave regiment; his name remains unknown.

Weather

A portrait painted during the rain

Heavy rains then interrupted Van Gogh's work in the fields around Arles and gave him the opportunity to work on these figures in the workshop.

Series

The second oil of Zouave

F424/JH1488 is the full-length seated portrait. It is distinguished from bust F423/JH1486, where the same model appears in front of a green door and an orange wall.
