Short answer

Neither wife nor child are known

No records show that Leonardo da Vinci married. No sons or daughters are recognized in his accounts, correspondence or will. He therefore dies without a known direct descendant.

His intimate life remains more difficult to summarize. He lives mainly in male households made up of students, assistants and servants. An accusation of relations between men was filed in Florence in 1476 and then abandoned. His lasting ties to Salaigh and Francesco Melzi are certain; their sexual nature cannot be demonstrated by the available records.

The historical file

Four facts to separate from interpretations

01Wife

No documented marriages

No marital contract, no mention of wife and no marital home appear in the known archives.

02Children

No known descendants

Leonardo does not recognize any sons or daughters, and his will does not designate a child.

03House

A male entourage

He lives and travels with assistants, servants and students, notably Salaigh then Francesco Melzi.

04Sexuality

Insufficient archives

A 1476 charge is dismissed without conviction. It is historically important but is not enough to define an entire intimate life.

The accusation before the Night Office

Portrait traditionally identified as Salaikh, identification discussed
A real document, a limited conclusion

Accused, then not convicted

In Florence, an organization called the Night Office continued sexual relations between men. In 1476, an anonymous denunciation targeted Leonardo and three other young men about Jacopo Saltarelli. The case was examined and then abandoned, notably due to lack of sufficient evidence.

This file confirms that Leonardo was exposed to the sexual and judicial surveillance of his time. It constitutes neither a condemnation nor a detailed account of a relationship. Historians can integrate it into the study of his desires and his environment, but not make him say more.

The portrait presented here is traditionally identified as Salaikh, arriving much later in Leonardo's life. This identification itself remains debated: the image therefore does not illustrate the affair of 1476.

A chosen family?

Salaikh, Melzi and the men of the house

The best documented connections are made of work, cohabitation, dependence, affection and inheritance.

Salaikh, person linked to Leonardo da Vinci
Gian Giacomo Caprotti · in the entourage from 1490

Salaigh

Leonardo welcomed Salaikh when he was still a child and kept him around for almost thirty years. His notes combine irritation, expenses, gifts and fascination with his beauty. Salaikh is an assistant, housemate, testamentary beneficiary and perhaps model of certain male types. The exact nature of their intimate relationship is undocumented.

Francesco Melzi, person linked to Leonardo da Vinci
Student, assistant and heir

Francesco Melzi

Coming from a Milanese family, Melzi accompanied Leonardo to Rome then to France, treated him in his last years and inherited the manuscripts. Their bond is clearly deep, intellectual and emotional. However, the sources do not allow us to attribute a sexual dimension to it with certainty.

The other members of the house, person linked to Leonardo da Vinci
Assistants, servants and collaborators

The other members of the house

Zoroastro, Battista de Vilanis, Boltraffio or Marco d'Oggiono belong to different periods and functions. A court artist's household is also a place of work, service and economic dependence; we must not transform every proximity into a romantic relationship.

Female portraits

Painting a woman does not mean loving her

Romanticized biographies sometimes confuse model, muse and mistress. The documents require a more sober reading.

Cecilia is the mistress of the Duke of Milan and the model of an innovative portrait, not a companion of the artist.

Lisa Gherardini

Lisa is the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. The mystery of the painting does not create any romantic story with Leonardo.

Study for the head of Leda by Leonardo da Vinci
Mythology

Leda: desire and metamorphosis

Studies for Leda explore beauty, hair and a mythological history of fertility. They belong to artistic invention, not autobiography.

Studies of the fetus in the womb by Leonardo da Vinci
Anatomy

The fetus: understanding generation

Leonardo studies pregnancy with the eyes of an anatomist. This research demonstrates his curiosity for life, not the existence of a personal child.

True or false?

Six myths about Leonardo's love life

"Salaikh was her husband"

No. No marriage was legally possible between them in this context and no document designates them that way.

"The Mona Lisa was his mistress"

No proof. The traditional model, Lisa Gherardini, was married to Francesco del Giocondo.

"He had secret children"

No children appear in archives, accounts or will. The absence of proof is not metaphysical proof of impossibility, but history cannot affirm descendants.

"The 1476 accusation proves it all"

It shows that he was charged with three other young men, then that the case was dropped. It delivers neither a complete intimate story nor a certain modern identity.

"His baby drawings reveal his paternity"

These sheets are artistic and anatomical studies. They inform his observation of the body, not his family situation.

"He hated women"

Nothing allows this shortcut. He works with sponsors, paints major female portraits and studies women's bodies intensely.

FAQs

Love life and descendants

Was Leonardo da Vinci married?

No. No marriages or wives are documented in known records.

Did Leonardo da Vinci have children?

No recognized or documented children are known. His will does not mention any direct descendants.

Was Leonardo da Vinci homosexual?

Historians have an abandoned 1476 accusation and lasting relationships with male companions. These elements nourish the study of his desires, but modern categories do not simply overlap with 15th-century Florence.

Was Salaikh Leonardo's lover?

This is an often defended hypothesis, but no document explicitly describes their sexual relationship. Their long proximity, gifts and Leonardo's aesthetic fascination are, however, attested.

Who was Francesco Melzi for Leonardo?

His favorite student, late assistant, companion of the French years and heir to his drawings and manuscripts.

Was the Mona Lisa in love with Leonardo?

No source indicates this. Lisa Gherardini is traditionally identified as the model and was the wife of Francesco del Giocondo.

Who inherits Leonardo since he has no children?

Francesco Melzi receives the manuscripts and drawings; Salaikh notably receives a share of vines; Battista de Vilanis and Leonardo's half-brothers are also among the beneficiaries.

Real intimacy, silent archives

Leonardo leaves neither wife nor known child. His ties to Salaikh and Melzi are essential to his life, but their exact nature should not be invented to fill the silences.
