Expressionism developed especially at the beginning of the 20th centurye century, particularly in Germany and Austria. Artists distort lines, intensify colors and simplify shapes in order to make anxiety, momentum, solitude or vital force visible.
Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky and Egon Schiele are major figures. Vincent van Gogh belongs to post-impressionism, but his gesture and emotional power make him an essential precursor, and not an expressionist in the strict historical sense.
