À propos de l’œuvre

Bol avec pivoines et roses, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh June 1886 Paris

Roses and peonies in a bowl, F249Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A large green bowl overflows with pink, white and red roses and peonies, while several cut flowers are placed on the table. This Parisian still life is a study of contrasts: the pink tones of the bouquet meet the greens of the container, the foliage and the background.

Look at the work

A full bouquet extends its colors onto the table

The flowers extend almost the entire width. Van Gogh does not separate each variety with botanical precision: he brings together petals and leaves in thick, short, oriented touches.

The green bowl forms a stable base under the explosion of the bouquet. In the foreground, the cut stems and fallen flowers break the symmetry, bring the motif closer to the viewer and reveal the work of material.

Roses and peonies F249/JH1105 is an oil on canvas measuring 59.8 × 72.5 cm painted in Paris in June 1886. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 109.371.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The canvas directly confronts red and green, complementary colors studied by Van Gogh through the writings of Charles Blanc. The contrast remains powerful despite the progressive alteration of certain red pigments.

01

The green bowl anchors the bouquet in the lower half

Its rounded and dark shape gives weight to the composition. The lighter touches of its decor respond to the white petals above.

02

The flowers are shaped by successive impasto

Whites, pinks and yellows are placed in visible material. This generous surface recalls Van Gogh's admiration for Adolphe Monticelli's floral still lifes.

03

The original reds were more supported

The museum reports that several red pigments have faded sharply. The current balance, lighter, therefore only restores part of the initial contrast with green.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F249/JH1105, dimensions of 59.8 × 72.5 cm and KM number 109.371 identify the large floral still life preserved in Otterlo.

Models

Flowers replace models that Van Gogh cannot afford

In Paris, his limited means make portrait sessions difficult. Theo reports that acquaintances regularly provide him with bouquets for his color studies.

Color

Red and green are placed in complementary opposition

Van Gogh applies Charles Blanc's principles: two opposing colors intensify each other. The container and the green background thus make the roses and peonies vibrate.

Matter

Impasto becomes an essential component of the bouquet

The thick paint makes the corollas almost tactile. The museum brings this material energy closer to the influence of the Marseille painter Adolphe Monticelli.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the large green bowl, the density of the bouquet, the petals placed in relief, the cut flowers in the foreground and the subtle opposition between pale roses and deep greens.

  • The large green bowl that occupies the lower center
  • White roses shaped by a thick material
  • Pink and red peonies mixed with foliage
  • Cut flowers arranged on the table
  • The green touches that surround and cross the bouquet
