Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris

Bouquet of gladioli, F248bReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Tall white, pink and red gladioli soar from a metallic brown vase in a very narrow format. The flowers run from the blue table to the upper edge, while cut stems and fallen petals animate the foreground.

Look at the work

A column of flowers crosses almost the entire height of the canvas

Gladioli do not form a compact crown. Each pole rises separately, with its buds, open corollas and leaf blades; whites dominate the top, while pinks and reds densify the middle.

The dark vase occupies the lower third and receives broad pink-gray reflections. On the table, a red stem falls to the left and a white flower lies on the right, opening the composition beyond the container.

Bouquet of gladioli F248b/JH1150 is an oil on canvas of 65 × 35.2 cm painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The work belongs to the Fondation Planque under number FJSP-998-181 and is deposited at the Granet museum.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The vertical format forces Van Gogh to distribute the colors as a series of accents. The light flowers illuminate the black-brown background, and the blue touches of the table provide a cold counterpoint to the reds.

01

The poles give the composition its architecture

The stems start from the narrow neck of the vase then gradually move apart. Their divergence forms a high fan which fills the format without losing the readability of each flower.

02

White is never a uniform color

The corollas mix cream, gray, pale pink and small green shadows. These variations maintain their volume and prevent them from appearing cut out on the bottom.

03

The table acts as a standalone color zone

Blues, grays, yellows and reds are placed in brief touches around the fallen flowers. This multicolored base visually prepares the explosion of the bouquet.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F248b/JH1150 and FJSP-998-181 identify this bouquet from the Planque Foundation, today presented in the Jean Planque collection at the Granet museum.

Hideout

Jean Planque discovered the painting in 1959

He sees it in a very degraded state, hanging on a door, and yet recognizes its strength. The work not yet being listed, he then obtains authentication.

Collection

The painting belongs to the Planque Foundation

It is kept under number FJSP-998-181 and deposited at the Granet museum, in the chapel of the White Penitents in Aix-en-Provence.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the narrow format, the arrangement of the gladioli, the nuanced whites, the red concentration in the center, the reflections of the vase and the flowers fallen on the blue table.

  • The white stems which almost reach the upper edge
  • The pink and red gladioli grouped in the middle
  • The narrow collar and the gray-pink reflections of the vase
  • The red stem lying in the left foreground
  • The blue, yellow and red touches of the table
